Any leads at all will be appreciated.

The Flatpick mailing list just had reposted in the last couple weeks
several issues of a newsletter by a guy from Japan which is all about
CW, interviews with people he played with, his history, etc. There is
a flatpick archives somewhere - try searching in Yahoo for flatpick-l.
The CW stuff should be plenty for several articles.

Tony Rice has his guitar now. Quite a number of years ago he had it fixed
up by the Santa Cruz Guitar Company. Tony did a guitar workshop quite a
number of years ago which I attended during which he told the history of
the guitar. Then he passed it around for everyone to look at. It's the
nicest guitar I ever played.

I've heard, though, that Tony has gotten a little tired of people asking him,
on- and off-stage, "Is that Clarence White's guitar?", he's been said to
get a tad testy and reply "No, it's Tony Rice's guitar..." Can't say as I
blame him.

I'm coming in late on this thread, apologies if it's already been mentioned,
but this guitar has an enlarged sound hole. The story that gets passed around
is that Clarence, a chain smoker, was in the habit of stubbing out his butts
along the edge of the sound hole, so that eventually the hole had to be
enlarged to repair the damage. Maybe this story is true, maybe not, but it's
become part of the folklore of bluegrass...
