I just picked up the CD "Bargainville" by the Canadian group
Moxy Fruvous, and it is amazing! Anyone out there know if they
have any other releases? (and if so, are they available in the
U.S.?) Any info would be much appreciated.

They're a Toronto group. They have only one other release; it's a six-cut
(self-titled) indie cassette that they did before they were signed to a
label. Five of the six cuts were re-recorded for "Bargainville", the lone
exception being a rap version of Green Eggs and Ham.

"Bargainville" was a big success in Canada, so they'll certainly have a
successor in the works.

I saw one of their live shows in the Edinburgh Folk Festival in April,
and I thought they were excellent. Extremely funny, and they sing
well too. If the recordings are anywhere near as good, they'll be
worth getting, although of course it's not possible to capture all the
visual jokes. If they're in your area, I'd recommend seeing them.

I should point out that there are a few lyical references on the album that
might elude non-Canadians. I'd be happy to answer anyone's questions.

c.f. "Darlington Darling" refers to the Darlington Nulcear Power Station,
just east of Toronto. It's been in the news lately, as anyone familiar
with safety-critical software knows.

They are great. I saw them at the Vancouver Folk Festival in 1992 and I was
literally rolling in the grass laughing so hard at their Rap version of
Green Eggs and Ham (proving my assertion that Dr. Seuss is the grandfatehr
of rap).
My Baby Loves Authors is another favorite (I'm a librarian).
They did a tape with six songs (both sides are the same) simply titled Moxy
Fruvous.(1992) I'm glad they have more material and have done a
CD--something to hunt down next time I go up to Vancouver.

I went to the record store yesterday and asked for Moxy Frivous and was
told yes they could order it it was listed as a rock not folk album so I
hestiated. Are they a folk-rock group or a folk group?

I don't listen to very much folk music - I'm just wandering through - but:
if Moxy Fruvous is folk then I'll eat my hat! So the answer to George's
question (and anyone else's) is no, and I don't think I'd even call them
folk rock. They used to do a-capella I think, or were more a-capella
oriented... anyhow they do some a-capella style things with their voices
(backing vocals providing a rhythm, etc), but their typical lineup might
be acoustic guitar, bass, drums (nothing large), and accordion.
