I have a 45 record of the Whiffenpoof song at home; it was
originally a college drinking song, became a popular song
in the military during the Second World War.

You can probably hear it sung in the movie "Twelve O'clock High", in the
bar scenes in the Officers Club. (An excellent movie, B&W, came out fairly
soon after WW II, available in VCR rental stores)

First verse starts:

From the tables down at Morey's to the place where Louie dwells

Sorry, dont remember the rest of that verse

The second classic verse to the song is:

We're poor little sheep who have lost our way, baa, baa, baa.
We're poor little lambs who have gone astray, baa, baa, baa.
Gentlemen, songsters off on a spree, doomed from here to eternity,
Lord have mercy on such as we, baa, baa, baa.

Contact me and I will try to get the rest of the words.

[Some of the words to the Whiffenpoof Song]

I sent this by email to the original requester, but
I may as well post it so that it will run through somebody
else's mind instead of mine. (That's how it works, right?
This song will run through my head until somebody else
picks it up?)

I guess this is not music.folk, but some criteria.

This is from memory, so there are sure to be small errors:

Verse:
From the tables down at Maury's
To the place where Louis dwells
To the dear old Temple Bar we love so well
Sing the Whiffenpoofs assembled
With their glasses raised on high
And the magic of their singing casts its spell
Yes the magic of their singing
All those songs we love to hear
"Shall I Wasting" and "Mavourneen" and the rest
We will serenade our Louis while life and hope do last
Then we'll pass and be forgotten like the rest

Chorus:
We are poor little lambs who have lost our way
Baa, baa, baa
We are little lost sheep who have gone astray
Baa, baa, baa
Gentleman songsters off on a spree
Damned from here to eternity

Lord have mercy on such as we

Baa, baa, baa

Aha!!!!!!

Thats where the lines in Tom Lehrer's "Bright College Days" comes
from!!!!

To the tables down at Morries (wherever that may be)
We'll drink a toast to all we love the best
We'll sleep through the lectures, and cheat on all the exams
And we'll pass, and be forgotten with the rest.

Right. But the chorus may be traced back as well as forward. It is
taken, with slight alteration, from Rudyard Kipling's lugubrious poem
"Gentlemen-Rankers" about officers who have been busted to the ranks
in the British army:

We're poor little lambs who've lost our way,
Baa! Baa! Baa!
We're little black sheep who've gone astray,
Baa-aa-aa!
Gentlemen-rankers out on the spree,
Damned from here to Eternity,
God ha' mercy on such as we,
Bah! Yah! Bah!
