The Winnipeg Folk Festival has mailed its preliminary brochure to its regulars.

The dates are July 6-9/95, and the place, as usual is Birds Hill Park.

The brochure includes a list of performers. My first impression is that the
Festival is following the same direction as in the last two or three years: a
smaller (compared to earlier festivals) list with exposure of artists who have
not been to Winnipeg before.

The Festival will have some pretty well known US artists: Ani DiFranco, Loudon
Wainright III, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, Claudia Schmidt. There are a number
of UK artists, and a number of World Beat or World Music acts. I confess my
ignorance - I don't know who these artists are and I can't say if they are
popular.

If there is interest, I will post the list or ask the Festival if they want to
post a list.

I know Winnipeg is a long haul from most places in the US, but we usually see
plates from the midwest and northern 'heartland' states.

Sigh. I guess Tony must be new in Winnipeg. Although Cathy Fink _is_
originally from Maryland, and now lives again in the Washington, D.C.
area, where I hope she is doing well, she lived in Winnipeg for many
years, and was a regular feature on the folk scene there. Her duo with
the late, lamented Duck Donald exposed a lot of young folkies to the
joys of "Old-Time" country music, and they were among the first
performers at the Winnipeg folk festival. She is a _very_ good
claw-hammer banjo player, a good guitar and fiddle player, and a fair
hand at the Appalachian dulcimer. It is wonderful to see what an
accomplished singer she has become in the last 20 years, too. She is also a
dedicated collector of songs for children. I believe Cathy has been at
the festival more years than not since it was founded. Two of the most
enjoyable evenings I have spent watching and listening to live music were
at the Old Firehall in London, Ontario, in 1979, on the last tour of the
Cathy Fink and Duck Donald Band (which also featured a very young Darcy
Deaville on guitar and fiddle).
