Dave Mallett was semi-popular and somewhat well known in the folk circles
back in the late 70's. His biggest song was made popular by two other
very well known singers, Pete Seeger and John Denver.

From memory, I recall it starting something like:

"Inch by inch, row by row
Gonna make this garden grow
With a rake and a hoe
And a piece of fertile ground."

I saw Dave at the Old Dominion University Folk Festival in Norfolk, VA
back in 1977 when I was stationed there while in the Navy.

Haven't heard anything by/about home for at least ten years.

He has a CD that's been out just a few months. I can't remember the name
of it, though.

Dave Mallett is still active in the music business though he's been
concentrating more on songwriting than performing.

Originally from Maine, Mallett is frequently comapred to Gordon Lightfoot
for his smooth baritone and mid-tempo wrting style. He initially released
several albums on a now-defunct label whose name I can't remember. He was
then picked up by Flying Fish records where he released 3 or 4 more albums,
including a compilation CD containing the best tracks from his first three
non-Flying Fish recordings.

Mallett then relocated from New England to Nashville to concentrate more
on songwriting than his performing career. He's become quite successful
in Nashville with many of his songs being picked up by a variety of
country/folk artists.

He was recently picked up by Vanguard Records and has released
his first recording in several years. Called "This Town" the CD continues
his exploration of the diminishing rural landscape that was so prominant
on his early recordings as well as his look at adult relationships which was
characteristic of his Flying Fish recordings. "This Town" is produced
by Jim Rooney, who produced Nanci Griffith's early recordings (as well as
her most recent) and he applies similar crisp acoustic touches to Mallett's
work as well.

"This Town" has a very strong selection of songs and far surpasses most
of his Flying Fish material.
