Actually, it's "fly Tranlove Airways..."
Here are the lyrics--from the Sunshine Superman LP

The Fat Angel

He will bring happiness in a pipe,
He'll ride away on his silver bike
And apart from that he'll be so kind
In consenting to blow your mind.
Fly Translove Airways, get you there on time.
Fly Translove Airways, get you there on time.

He will bring orchids for my lady,
The perfume will be of an excellent style
And apart from that he'll be so kind
In consenting to blow your mind.
Fly Translove Airways, get you there on time.
Fly Translove Airways, get you there on time.

He will bring happiness in a pipe,
He'll-a ride away on his silver bike
And apart from that he'll be so kind
In consenting to blow your mind.
Fly Jefferson Airplane, get you there on time.
Fly Jefferson Airplane, get you there on time.

He will bring happiness in a pipe,
He'll ride away on his silver bike
And apart from that he'll be so kind
In consenting to blow your mind.
Fly Translove Airways, get you there on time.
Fly Translove Airways, get you there on time.

We'll be flying at an altitude of thirty-nine thousand feet
Captain High at your service.

That was "fly translove airways--get you there on time"
I can go through almost all of the lyrics but can't hit the title.
Drat. I *think* it's from the Soupyday Rubberman album.

The song is "The Fat Angel", which was written for Mama Cass Elliot of
the Mamas & Papas.

Actually, it was written for Jefferson Airplane, which is why one
verse's lyrics are "Fly Jefferson Airplane, gets you there on time."

A live 1968 version of Jefferson Airplane performing the song
(complete with British accents on the vocals) was released on "Bless
Its Pointed Little Head". According to the 1996 CD liner notes,
Donovan's version was on his 1966 "Sunshine Superman" album.

Angel", eh? :)

Seriously, the stream of consciousness lyricism of songs like this
one can only lend itself to vague interpretations of what the "entire
lyric" is about. However, the image(both voice & girth) of Mama Cass as
"The Fat Angel" still makes sense to me.

As for the "entire song" being "written for" another band -in this
instance Jefferson Airplane- your post is the first time I've read
anything about Donovan writing a song specifically for another band.
Wouldn't it be scarey if Donovan wrote "Season Of The Witch" for Vanilla
Fudge? :)

Or if Cat Stevens wrote "Cats In The Cradle" for Stray Cats or the
musical "Cats"...and on..and so on....
(with apologies to the late, great Harry) and Sandra!

From what I've heard the song was written, then Airplane picked it up
and changed the last "Trans-love" to "Jefferson". (With, I was told,
the author's approval.) And since I think I got this factoid off JA's
liner notes for one of their best-of collections...

But what the heck do I know; my only connection with pop culture is
observing it from a safe distance.

It's my impression that the song was written about the psychedelic San
Francisco scene and that the Fat Angel referred to in the title is Jerry
Garcia.

Fat Angel
Donovan Leitch

He will bring happiness in a pipe

He'll ride away on his silver bike

And apart from that he will be so kind

In consenting to blow your mind

Fly Translove Airways gets you there on time
Fly Jefferson Airplane gets you there on time

He will bring orchids for my lady

The perfume of an excellent kind
And apart from that he will be so kind

In consenting to blow your mind

Fly Translove Airways gets you there on time
Fly Jefferson Airplane gets you there on time

And he's travelling at an altitude of 50 thousand light years
Captain Trips and you...

The 'he' seems to be a reference to one person who is identified in the
last line as Captain Trips. Go ask any Deadhead (or Alice) who Captain
Trips is.
