ANI DIFRANCO SPENDS MOTHER’S DAY ’98 WITH THE HILL FAMILY
ON THE FOX SERIES “KING OF THE HILL”

Singer/songwriter Ani DiFranco makes a cameo appearance in cartoon form on the
May 10, 1998 Mother’s Day episode of the satirical FOX-TV animated series King
of the Hill. In“Peggy’s Turtle Song,” Peggy Hill quits her job as substitute
school teacher in order to spend more time with her son Bobby, who has been
misdiagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder after eating too much Oatmeal
Cookie Crunch. DiFranco provides the voice of Emily, a feminist rocker who
gives guitar lessons to Peggy and encourages her to reject her newfound
homemaker role through heartfelt autobiographical songs. The late country
legend Tammy Wynette is also featured on the program in the role of Hank Hill’s
mother, Tilly.

DiFranco’s dialogue was recorded well before her scenes were animated, but fans
can expect Emily’s features to resemble the best-known aspects of a certain
traveling troubadour. “Apparently they wrote the character with me in mind,
and the little cartoon has got spiky little dreadlocks, a bare-midriff, and
these stompy boots,” Ani says. “I come up to the house and one of the guys on
the corner says, ‘Geez, Hank, she’s dressed kinda ... pro-choice, doncha
think?’”

Ani says her new parallel existence as an animated character makes perfect
sense to her. “I thought it would be kinda funny to be a cartoon, cuz I feel
like a cartoon most of the time,” she laughs.
