DH>Wanna talk about them?
Bob Ruzicka, the Singing Dentist? Haven't seen hide nor hair of him for
years! The last time I saw him play was the Winnipeg Folk Festival 1974.
After that he had a little variety show on CBC. After that he
disappeared. Any info on his where abouts would be appreciated. He used
to sing a song, Jack of Diamonds that still drifts thru my mind.

He didn't disappear, just settled on Vancouver Island and has a good
practice fixing kid's teeth. He used to come up to Nanaimo once a week
but think he's still in the Victoria area. He was much in demand for his
specialty and most of his clients probably don't know about his musical
past.
Yeah!
or...
O-my-G-d, Bob Ruzicka is a dentist? a Singing Dentist?? you never know.
I've been trying to find more songs by this guy for years, but because I
had written it down as Bob Rozicka, & tended to remember it as
"Mike Rozicky", with doubts as to spelling, the trying wasn't finding
anything.
I wrote down the words to Down & Losing (at least that's what I think the
album called it) from a stay at the house of some people who were wild about
the album it was on, but all I can remember about the rest of the album is
Appalachian fiddle tunes, which were very good but which I wasn't primarily
into at the time, & which didn't have many or any words. Certainly not
that haunted your dreams.
That song, on the other hand:
Jack of Diamonds
Queen of Spades
Fingers tremble, memory fades
Its a foolish man who tries to bluff the dealer
Jokers laughed and Lady Luck smiled
The aces were high and the deuces were wild...
When you're down and losing, everyone's a cheater
Got a little more than you bargained for
A little more than you had in mind
They called your bluff and 21
Beats 19
Every time
Life's a lot like that my friend
Your luck runs out and your win streak ends
When the deck is stacked
You can't bluff the dealer
Just when things were going fine
Someone jumped you from behind
When you're down and losing
Everyone's a cheater
You can't win and you can't break even
And you can't get out of the game
You shouldn't stay but you ain't leaving
Cause your luck may change
Again
Jack of Diamonds
Queen of Spades
Fingers tremble
Memory fades
Its a foolish man who tries to bluff the dealer
When you're down and losing everyone's a cheater

Yup, a dentist, and a children's dentist at that. He played a bit at the
Vancouver Folk Music Festival following the cancellation of his TV show
(which was based in Calgary or Edmonton). At that time he lived on
Vancouver Island; I assume he still does. I also assume he has given up
on commercial recording, as I haven't seen or heard anything in years. I
have at least half a dozen different albums of his (vinyl, of course),
and wouldn't part with them. He's always been one of my favourite singers.
