To the best of my knowledge, there never were tunes in any edition. You're
probably thinking of Bronson-Child. I contacted Houghton-Mifflin a while
back & they have absolutely no intention of re-doing this superb digest of
the great work. Perhaps Andy's Front Hall & Camsco might get together on
this & consider a facsimile issue???????????
On the other hand, nearly any book on English language ballads (NOT songs,
BALLADS) will include a number of Child ballads & will reference them. I
believe the excellent Oxford Book of Ballads is still available.
Here's the list on (out-of-print) stuff to ask your library for:
Probably the most commonly used and most useful & approachable edition
was Prof. Kittredge's abreviation of 1904. It is very intelligently
selected, with at least 2 & up to 7 or so representative samples of each
ballad. It has all (I think) of Child's notes on each song and a good
glossary (including Scottish stuff.) It's a single volume of 730 thin
pages.
Inexplicably, it leaves out five ballads. Not because they're unusually
sexy...don't see any reason.

Bronson's _Traditional tunes of...._ is also "available" in the full set
or a shorter version. The full set, unless you are fantastically lucky,
would cost an arm, a leg and at least one unmentionable. I've not
personally seen the shorter version, but we are informed that it is very
good and reasonably priced.

Not quite. The Dover (or was it Oak . . .theat the trouble with
having the net connection at work and the library at home)
multi-volume good quality paperback volume had an appendix of a
very limited number of tunes - I think selected on the basis of
their being rare or obscure or something. Certainly not a great
deal of use . . .
