Why, if you buy Tom Russell's "The Man From God Knows Where" you get that,
plus some of the finest songs ever written by a contemporary songwriter.
"Orphan Train" was the one song he felt he had to include even though he
didn't write it.

...it's a small world. My CD includes the song "Orphan Train" that I wrote. I
heard this summer about David Massengill's. Mine is on real audio at
www.texpatriate.com thru the link to songs.com.

There's yet another song titled "Orphan Train", written by Utah Phillips. Jody
Stecher and Kate Brislin included it on their Phillips tribute album, "Heart
Songs", which came out on Rounder a couple of years ago. Dry Branch Fire Squad
has been doing it in concert recently as well, with Ron Thomason doing the
vocal. Great song.

We saw him at the Rose Garden in Mansfield, MA in September, and he
did this one. Brought tears to many eyes.

The song's on David Massengill's CD "The Return" (Plump Records
5903-2, 1995). The lyrics are in the CD booklet. It's an awesome
album, definitely worth having...

I just came across this. I am the person that wrote to David Massengill
hoping that we might be related, or that perhaps he could furnish me
with some information. I was born Don Massengill. Me and my brother
(James ) was placed in the children`s home here in Joplin Mo. I have
searched for my brother, as we were separated, I have never been able to
find him. David was kind enough to respond, and then he wrote the song,
based on my search. We have been in touch, but I have never met him. I
hope to some day. I heard a song by him (My name Joe) on a folk music
program. I wrote to the station and found out how to get in touch with
him, I didn`t think he would even answer. I was adopted by Mr. & Mrs
McClanahan, a great mother and father to me, they are deceased.

So good of you to write and tell us your story! I've cried over it many
times listening to the song; it's a privilege to hear from the person who
inspired the song. I hope you are able to use the power of the internet in
order to locate your brother. Keep us posted!

Regards,

Claire H.
