Greetings. I looking for a source for military songs. Let me specify
which type. I am not looking for marching songs (Jody Calls). I am not
looking for music scored for a marching band or anything instrumental.
I'm looking for the songs written by and sung by the soldiers. I had an
old reel to reel my dad brought back from Vietnam which included songs
like: "A Huey Kind of War" "Itizuke Tower" "Sandy Cannonball"
"Ballad of the Jolly Greens" "Come and fly with the Jolly Greens"
and many others. The tape was lost in a fire four years ago. Any help
anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I can give you texts of a few British W.W. II songs Ewan MacColl used
to sing: "Browned Off", "Bless 'em All", "The Second Front Song".

Two good albums, old ones and probably not on CD, I don't know
how hard to find:

Oscar Brand Don't remember name, title indicates flying
songs. (World War II and Korean war era)

Barry Sadler Ballads of the Green Berets (Viet Nam era)

Oscar Brand also did other albums with various "off color" songs that
are typical of barracks songs, such as Bawdy Barroom Ballads.

There is a relatively new collection on Flying Fish, FF 70552, called
In Country: Folk Songs of Americans in the Vietnam War, with just the
sort of stuff you are looking for. Sung by a bunch of Vietnam vets,
including my friend Saul Broudy; and annotated by Lydia Fish of the
Vietnam Veterans Oral History and Folklore Project: Buffalo State
College, 1300 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14222; phone (716) 883-1843.
It's a CD, and the only one I know of for this war. -- Lani
