AUGUST 1998

CHERISH THE LADIES LIVE! Big Mammy Records. Live concerts from the popular
American group, recorded in New Hampshire and Vermont

THE THREE PIECE FLUTE. Desi Wilkinson. CDP 1009. This one has been around
for quite a while, but only on a cassette. Desi, a member of Cran, sings,
lilts and plays flute, and it’s good to see it out on CD at last.

DON’T GET ME WRONG. Frances Black. 491421 2. A new album from Frances Black.

WORLD LIBRARY OF FOLK AND PRIMITIVE MUSIC: IRELAND. Various. ROUCD 1742.
Great re-issue of 1955 LP, made on location by Alan Lomax in 1951. Artists
featured are Seamus Ennis, Mickey Doherty, Elizabeth Cronin, Colm O
Caoidheain, Margaret Barry, Sean ‘Ac Dhonnchadha and more. Particularly
strong on songs.

WORLD LIBRARY OF FOLK AND PRIMITIVE MUSIC: SCOTLAND. Various. ROUCD 1743.
Similar to the Irish album, featuring Ewan MacColl, Isla Cameron, Tom
Anderson, Jimmy MacBeath.

WORLD LIBRARY OF FOLK AND PRIMITIVE MUSIC: ENGLAND. Various. ROUCD 1741.
Similar to the above pair, featuring Jim & Bob Copper, Jack Armstrong, Phil
Tanner and others.

AN BUACHAILLIN BAN Aine Meirbhic. AMECD 001. Excellent Munster singing.
First album by a Cork lady who has already made quite an impression by her
live performances; classic songs in Gaelic sung unaccompanied.

THE DIMMING OF THE DAY. Jerry Lynch. TOLCD 9. Old and modern songs sung with
excellent arrangements.

THE GOLD SUN OF FREEDOM. Danny Doyle. MCD 60056. More 1798.

THE CROPPY’S COMPLAINT. Various. CRCD03. And more, from Jim McFarland, Sean
Tyrrell, The Four Star Trio, Tim Lyons and others. This one is very good.

NO STRANGER. Sean Keane. GRACD 242. Ten contemporary songs and one
traditional from Sean (one of the Caherlistrane family).

AN DIOLAIM. Clannad. MCCD 351. A cheap compilation of their earlier music,
and as is usual with Music Club, the selection is excellent.

DEAR HARP OF MY COUNTRY. James W. Flannery and Janet Harbinson.. No number.
Two CDs and a lavishly presented book. Flannery is an Irish tenor, and in
this production he sings Thomas Moore’s Irish Melodies. The book (175pp) is
beautifully produced, and is a scholarly look at Moore and the historical
context of his work.

CELTIC RHAPSODY. Seán McGuire and His Fiddle Orchestra. PLATCD 294. No
information as to who the orchestra is.
FAILTE. Peadar O Flatharta & Martin Joe O Flatharta. CICD 134. Contemporary
songs in Irish and English.

And there’s another upheaval of compilations from Outlet’s back catalogue,
which I’ll list;
THE COMPLETE IRISH NATIONAL ANTHEM. IRB 1937CD.
THE VERY BEST OF IRISH REBEL SONGS, VOL. 1. IRBCD 001
THE VERY BEST OF IRISH REBEL SONGS, VOL. 2. IRBCD002.
KEVIN BARRY & OTHER GREAT IRISH REBEL BALLADS. IRB1920CD.
ALL THE BEST REBEL SONGS OF IRELAND. CDKOL 600.
A NATION ONCE AGAIN – 18 GREAT IRISH REBEL BALLADS.IRB1814CD
READINGS FROM OSCAR WILDE. Gearoid Mac Lachlainn. PTICD 2006.
FESTIVAL OF IRISH FOLK MUSIC. CHCD 1013N.
FESTIVAL OF IRISH FOLK MUSIC, VOL 2. CHCD 1035N.
