Has anyone heard of this up and coming talent? I really like her song
"Better Life". Unfortunately, I cannot find a tape or CD. Any
information would be appreciated.

Get Christine Lavin's compilation CD "Follow That Road" (Highlights
of the second annual Martha's Vineyard Singer/Songwriters' Retreat).
Diane Z.'s "Cog In the Wheel" is on it. The accompanying booklet
says that she has to date recorded one cassette, and that her
"debut CD" will be on Philo/Rounder in 1995. No clues as to how to
get the cassette.

For management/bookings, contact Ellen Karas, Sage
Productions, (413)585-8004.

Diane Zeigler is also featured on a CD from Sony/Legacy called "Bring It
On Home". It's one of two CD's that contain music from Artie & Happy
Traum's radio show from Albany, NY. There's some really good stuff on
there all done "live" on the radio. The one I have has also got two really
great songs from Livingston Taylor, a couple by Rory Block, Rick Danko (of
The Band), David Wilcox, and John Sebastian.

I normally don't like these compilation disks, but this one's really good.

...and I *think* Diane was also featured on "American Impressionist Songwriters"
(along with a lot of other great up-and-comers) on Waterbug Records. Of
course, I don't have the number with me. But they're in Chicago, I think...

I have Diane Zeigler's tape (recorded in 1993). Info on the insert says
additional tapes may be ordered for $10 plus $1.50 postage by writing
to: 30 Swan Place
Arlington, MA (no zip code is given)
617-646-6393

Her song "A Better Light" is on this tape as well as some other nice
stuff. I think she's an up-and-coming artist whose best efforts are
ahead of her. This first tape didn't grab me particularly, but I'll be
keeping an eye out for her in the future. Sort of Nanci Griffith-ish, if
one must make a comparison.

Cheers,

Anne

I have two addresses for Diane Zeigler. The first one is probably the most
recent since I received a tape from her with that return address within the
last two years. The second address listed is the one on her tape. It says
to send $10 plus $1.50 for shipping to get a copy of the tape.

I highly recommend her music. I have also heard that her tape is about to
be released as a CD so you may want to just write to the address and
inquire about its release date.

This address is probably outdated. I have a postcard from Fall 1994
that gives a contact address as Sage Productions, 258 Harvard St.,
Suite 283, Brookline, MA 02146 (508-461-0176), but it only says
bookings and information, not tapes. She was selling the tape the
last time I saw her (Passim in October), and Andrew Calhoun was
distributing it through Waterbug (800-466-0234). I would have thought
that with the Rounder album due out in early 1995 (probably with
a fair bit of overlap in contents), that she would stop selling the
tape in order to build up demand for the new album, but that's only
a guess.

Her song "A Better Light" is on this tape as well as some other nice

Hmm, that's not a comparison that ever crossed my mind. The only
similarity between them that I can think of is that they both did
a gig at Passim in pain after slipping on the ice.

Anyway, she writes finely crafted lyrics, sometimes brilliant, sometimes
quirky, and always interesting. Her singing and guitar-playing are
very easy to like. When I first heard her about 4 years ago, I was
very unimpressed, but within a year she had improved so much that now
I almost never miss a chance to hear her.

As Peggy Bertsch mentioned earlier, Zeigler has a few cuts on the
American Impressionist Songwriter album (available from Waterbug,
very highly recommended): "Jack's Belted Galloways" and "Rock of Ages
(Barre, VT)".

The CD is not a reissue of her tape. It's a new recording made this
past summer and fall. The tape is a couple of years old. And the
Athol address is the current one.

First saw Diane perform about three or four years ago at Crone's Harvest in
Jamaica Plain. Then, much to my delight, she turned up as the opener at
New Women's Voices at Sanders Theatre about two years ago. She can be seen
regularly at The Olde Vienna Coffee House in Westboro.
