Key of Dm
Small letters are _simplified_ melody notes. In reality you should throw
in lots of grace notes, hammer-ons, pick-offs, slides, slurs, etc. Range
is from C on 5th string 3rd fret up to C on 2nd string 1st fret. If too
high, transpose down to Am. If too low, capo up ad lib. Best of luck.

Same for verses. If you'd like lyrics, I've got the Trio's, plus a batch
from Lomax's "North American Folk Songs."

You've been given a number of versions in D minor, which may not be
too good on the guitar if you're just starting out!
It started life as a banjo tune, I think, but try these :
Em D Em
Shady grove, my little love, shady grove ay-oh
Em D Em D Em
Shady grove, my little love, bound for shady grove
Em D Em
I wish I had a big fat horse and corn to feed him on
Em D Em D
Em
Pretty little girl to stay at home and feed him when I'm gone
There are lots of verses - you could even make some up
yourself - it's called the folk process - and if the E minor key
is difficult, try A minor ( Em = Am and D = G, above), or use
a capo! Enjoy your practice and your music!
Best wishes
