From digital tradition, http://pubweb.parc.xerox.com/digitrad/list=100:
WATER IS WIDE
[view or play tune]
WATER IS WIDE
The water is wide, I cannot get oer
Neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row, my love and I
A ship there is and she sails the sea
She's loaded deep as deep can be
But not so deep as the love I'm in
I know not if I sink or swim
I leaned my back against an oak
Thinking it was a trusty tree
But first it bent and then it broke
So did my love prove false to me
I reached my finger into some soft bush
Thinking the fairest flower to find
I pricked my finger to the bone
And left the fairest flower behind
Oh love be handsome and love be kind
Gay as a jewel when first it is new
But love grows old and waxes cold
And fades away like the morning dew
Must I go bound while you go free
Must I love a man who doesn't love me
Must I be born with so little art
As to love a man who'll break my heart
When cockle shells turn silver bells
Then will my love come back to me
When roses bloom in winter's gloom
Then will my love return to me

sung by Beers Family on Golden Skein and Lou and Sally Killen
SF
(DT of April 1995)
This is made up of versions supplied and sung by a lot of people, including:
Karla Bonoff
Evelyn Gordon
Rob Lopresti
Lorenna McKennitt
James Taylor
Beers Family
and various people on rec.music.folk.
Alternate versions of lines are indented...
The water is wide, I cannot cross o'er
The water is wide, I cannot cross
And neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row, my love and I
Oh, love is gentle, love is kind
Now, love is tender, and love is kind
Now, love is handsome, and love is fine
Oh, love be handsome, and love be kind
The sweetest flower when first 'tis new
Bright as a jewel when first it's new
And love's a jewel when first it's new
And love is sweet when first it's new
Gay as a jewel when first it is new
But love grows old and waxes cold
But when it's old, love waxes cold
And fades away like morning dew
Down in the meadow the other day
I picked some flowers all wet with dew,
I picked some flowers all bright and gay
Gathering flowers both bright and gay
I picked some flowers all red and blue.
Gathering flowers both red and blue
I little thought what love might do.
I reached out to a rosy bush,
I put my hand into a bush,
I put my hand in some soft bush,
Thinking the fairest flower to find.
Thinking the sweetest flower to find
I pricked my finger on a thorn,
But I pricked my finger to the bone
And left the sweet rosebud behind.
And left the sweetest flower behind.
Leaving the fairest flower behind
I leaned my back against an oak
I leaned by back against a reed
Thinking it was a trusty tree
Thinking it was a mighty tree
But first it bent and then it broke
And so did my false love to me
And thus did my love prove false to me
And thus did my love unto me
As my own love proved false to me
As did my false "true love" to me
There is a ship and she sails the sea
There was a ship that sailed the seas
She's loaded deep as deep can be
Sunk as deep as deep can be
She's loaded deep with jewels rare
But not as deep as the love I'm in
I know not how I sink or swim
I know not whether I'll sink or swim
[The song "Carrighfergus" by Loreena McKennitt is a similar song which has the
following verse:]
But the sea is wide, and I can't swim over.
Neither have I wings to fly.
If I could find me a handsome boatsman
To ferry me over to my love and die.
[These are two verses supplied by Rob Lopresti. The first is stolen from a
song with the same tune (and many similar verses), and the second is
Englishized from a Scottish poem called "Abandoned" which uses many of the
same verses and images as Waly Waly.]
If I had known when first I courted (or kissed)
That live was such a killing crime
I'd have locked my heart in a box of gold
And tied it up with silver twine
Tis not the frost that freezes so
Nor blowing snow's inclemency
Tis not this cold that makes me cry
But my love's heart grown cold to me
Maura O Connell, from JUST IN TIME (Rounder records). This version is a
capella. Maura has very robust, full Irish voice.
Mary Black, from WITHOUT THE FANFARE (GiftHorse Records). Another Irish
folkie, but this version is accompanied and a little jazzier.
Karla Bonoff, from RESTLESS NIGHTS (Columbia Records). This is my
personal favorite. The acoustic guitar arrangement is lovely, there are
some nice, Parisian-boulevard accordian flourishes and Karla's voice is
well suited to it. This version of the song is also available on the
soundtrack to the TV series thirtysomething.
This is surely one of the most-recorded folk/gospel chestnuts, however,
so there are doubtless dozens of other good interpretations of the
song. Hope this helps.
: Thanks :)

my favorite versions are by Del Suggs on the CD Floating on the
Surface (Key Porpoise Records) and Rory Block on High Heeled Blues
(Rounder Records).

for a totally non-saccharine version, check out the late Ozarks singer
Almeda Riddle on an old Minstrel-Collegium Sound Studios
recording...sounds like nails on a chalk board untill you appreciate the
greatness of the tradition she sings out of and the power of her
music...imho the best version
