Since I'm the one who started the thread I feel ogbliged to include some
info....someone just posted a discography for John Gorka and they missed one
that I know of offhand.....He does a track called (I think) "Christmas Bells"
on the Winter Solstice III album from Windham Hill, an incredible album by the
way. It starts of like:

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play...

But in despair I bowed my head
There is no peace on earth I said..

The hate is strong and mocks the song
Peace on earth good will to men...

An incredibly powerful track...definitely John.
By the way thank you to everyone who wrote in to me with tour/album/chat
I really appreciate it, it gets lonely in this lab. Amy Ann

Is this the song about the guy called up to go to Desert Storm
but he goes skating on the river one last time? Where is that
song?

I think not. As I recall, the music is Gorka's but the lyrics are a
poem by a famous poet - Tennyson? Whitman? Somebodyelseveryfamous?
Anybody got the details?

"From a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow" sez the
pseudo liner notes included in the CD.

Gorka is also the coauthor of Christine Lavin's
"Sensitive New Age Guys". He sings in the S.N.A.G.
chorus as well...

Hope this helps.

Well, we sing that hymn in church every year around Christmas time,
so I don't think John wrote it. According to our hymnal, the words
were written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882). Our music was
written by John Baptiste Calkin (1827-1905). John could have used
different music ... I don't have that CD, so I can't check.

You might be thinking of "Temporary Road", which is on a Fast Folk CD.
It is also the title of his new (not out yet) album, so you should be
able to get that version.

Here is the Fast Folk album. It is a good one:

Drive All Night||Flint, Kelly
Fishing Trip||Peterson, Al
Memory of You||Shindell, Richard
I Always Knew||Five Chinese Brothers, The

By now you have either read four copies of my post concerning "The Bells
of Christmas", or you have killed the thread, and missed this apology.

Our newsreader kept hanging when I tried to post. I thought it wasn't
getting out, but apparently it was. Mucho apologetico !!
