Hello -- you all will know the answer, I'm sure!

I heard a song this morning called "Cindy's Cryin'" by ______ Trio, from
their album "Alive". The song was about a junkie from the perspective
of someone who loves her. They (who?) started the song by saying that
they had seen a TV special about drug addiction and so had someone else
(I think they said Tom Paxton) who then wrote the song in the voice of
someone who loves a junkie and is watching the junkie die from the
disease of addiction. It was quite a powerful song...

"You tell me this is livin'
but I can see you dyin'"

"You tell me that you mean it (escape from addiction)
but you're not even tryin'"

"Cindy's on the street, stoppin' every man she meets
Cindy's a hooker down on Baker Street"

Can anyone point me to the group, tell me the right album if I mis-heard
and have the wrong album, and tell me who wrote the song? Do you have the
words available? I'd never heard it before, but I'd love to hear it again.

Thanks in advance for your help!

"Cindy's Crying" was written by Tom Paxton, and appears on one of his
earlier recordings. When I originally heard him perform it, he used the
same chorus for every verse, but later he modified one line of the chorus
and alternated the two different choruses for every other verse.

Here are the verses I remember:

Cindy's crying and it ain't no use
She's got the habit and she can't break loose
Stopping each and every man she meets
She's gonna be a hooker on Bleeker street, on Bleeker Street

Cindy went south and she took the cure
"This time, hone, I'm straight for sure"
Cindy went down to the grocery store
Gone ten minutes and I know you scored, I know you scored

Cindy loves me, but she's got to go
Down to the corner in the rain and snow
Standing on the corner while the rain comes down
Standing on the corner 'till the main comes round, 'till the man comes round

Cindy, Cindy what you gonna do
You got no money and you're way past due
You got every last penny I had
The man is leaving and your credit is bad, your...

Chorus:

Honey, can't you see I'm crying
Said you'd kick but I know you're lying
Say you're living; I can see you're dying.

I guarantee that these words are not exact, but it's at least a start.
There was also a Tom Paxton Songbook published many years ago by Oak
Publications, long since out of print.

Don't know whose recording you heard. I believe the song is by Tom Paxton.
The following is from memory, probably around 95% accurate:

Cindy's Crying

Cindy's crying but it ain't no use,
She's got a habit and she can't break loose,
Stopping each and every man she meets,
Gonna be a hooker on Bleeker Street,
On Bleeker Street...
Honey, makes you feel like crying.
Said you'd leave it, but you ain't even trying.
You call it living, baby feels like dying.

Cindy, Cindy, what you gonna do?
You got no money and you're way past due.
You got every last penny I had,
The man is restless, and your credit is bad,
And your credit is bad...
Honey, makes you feel like crying.
Said you'd leave it, but you ain't even trying.
They call it living, baby someone's lying.

Cindy went south to take the cure.
"This time, honey, I'm straight for sure."
Went to the corner to the grocery store,
You were gone ten minutes and I know you scored,
And I know you scored...
Honey, makes you feel like crying.
Said you'd leave it, but you ain't even trying.
Oh, I ain't leaving you and I ain't lying.

[repeat first verse]

Ect........

The song was written by Tom Paxton, My favorite version is on a double live
album that he did several years ago.
In his performance on this was called Cindy's Crying / The Hooker
He sang CC immediately followed by The Hooker (Another extremely powerful
Paxton song)

I saw him do this at a live performance. It was one of the few times that
I have ever seen anybody get a standing ovation in the middle of a set.

If you want the exact name of the album and the label let me know, I'll
look through my collection.

Version you heard - which is a very good one is on the album "The Mitchell
Trio Alive!". That's the Chad Mitchell Trio - and I think John Denver was
still with them at that time (about 1965). Some other good stuff
on that album also, including "He was a Friend of Mine" and "Like to Deal
with the Ladies", as well as a fairly poor rendition of "She Loves You"..

The version from a live performance recording in which the song was
followed immediately by "Hooker" is on "The Complete Tom Paxton", Elektra
Records 1970.

If you liked the Hooker by Paxton, check out some of his other Topical songs
lie like ----I am Changing My Name To Crysler
(title forgotten ) about the MAssacre at Attica Prison (" the govenor
(then N.Y. Gov Rockerfeller) cut my throat and he cut it good"

Born on the Fourth of July (Why didn't they use THIS ONE for the
movie?)

And then there are the old favorites (Rambling Boy, Are You Going Away with No
Words of Farewell, Hold Onto Me Babe, I can't help but Wonder Where I'm Bound,
ewtc. etc.)

Tom Paxtom is about the only perosn who I donm't mind not singing anyone else's
songs but his own...Wonder what he's doing nowadays

I believe he was scheduled to make an appearance at the Folkway in
Peterborough NH last month (February). He is a semi-frequent performer
there: amazing since the place only holds 2 or 3 dozen people. I saw
him there a year or two ago and was able to exchange a few words with
him after the show.

The next time he was around, he was promoting his children's books at a
small bookstore in Nashua NH. A friend and I went and got a few signed
copies. I've been a fan for a long time and both occasions were
quite a thrill for me.
