It sounds as if you've a tape of the High Level Ranters. The Ranters
don't have anything out on CD at the moment, but their recorded work,
particularly when Alistair Anderson played the Northumbrian smallpipes is
all distinguished. A like the Topic double Bonny Pit Laddie w/ Dick
Gaughan.

I have an old tape (late 70's I think) that my Dad recorded from
various BBC radio shows. I would like to know if any of the music on the
tape is available on CD. I only know a couple of the titles (or good
guesses), but I think most of it is from Northumbria. The titles that
I know "Blaydon Races" and "The Lampton Worm" (I'm not too sure about the
spelling). Another song might be called "Keep Your Feet Still Geordie
Hinny", then again it might not!

If anyone knows if these songs, or others that might be similar are
available on CD, please let me know.

Thanks,

Andy

Alistair Anderson has quite a volume of solo work out as well, especially on
the Front Hall label (located in rustic, serene Voorheesville, NY). _My_
recommendation for a terrific sampling of Northumbrian music is the "Cut and
Dry Dolly" albums, which spotlight the Northumbrian pipes in solos, duets,
trios and with other instruments (flute, fiddle and concertina). Anderson and
Colin Ross, who also used to play with the Ranters, Jim Hall, Anthony & Carole Robb
are the musicians. I haven't heard the second of the two albums, but if it's
half as good as the first it's superb.

Look out for material by Northumbrian piper an fiddle player Kathryn Tickell.
Her two solo albums, 'On Kielder Side' and 'Borderlands' feature a lot of
traditional tunes. Her later material, with the Kathryn Tickell Band mixes
traditional Northumbrian, Scots and Irish tunes with her own compositions,
rendered in a more progressive style but excellent all the same.
Her father, Mike Tickell has just released an album of traditional
Northumbrian songs, featuring his daughter on fiddle and viola and the
highly respected Martin Simpson on Guitar.
The Kathryn Tickell Band no longer exists under that name, but
Kathryn is currently touring with guitarist Ian Carr and Bassist Neil
Harland as the Kathryn Tickell Trio. Catch them at Fairport's Cropredy
Festival this year, at the Sidmouth Festival or at some festival in Andover,
of which I am currently trying to find details of.
