I will be DJ-ing my first wedding reception soon, and I expect requests
for "The Cotton-Eyed Joe," "The Schottische," and "The Chicken Dance."
These tunes are quite popular for dancing at wedding receptions, at
least around here.

I have CEJ and S on an album (vinyl) by Isaac Payton Sweat, but the
CEJ has a vocal on it that I would rather do without. I would like
to get instrumental versions of each of these tunes on CD, but I have
no idea who has recorded them. If anyone can help point me in the
right direction, I would be most appreciative. Please respond by
email to this account. Thank you.

There is a pretty good mostly inst. version on the "Honeysuckle Rose
soundtrack" by Willie Nelson and friends. They faintly say "Bullshit" a
few times.

I would like to find a version of the chicken dance, AKA The Bird Dance,
on CD... My current copy came from nice grandmother-aged woman that
asked for it at a reception she was atteneding. I didn't have it and she
sent me a cassette of it from the 45 they use at her Senior Services
meeting room!

Did you ever find out where to get a recording for The Chicken Dance? If
not, I could probably get some info this weekend from a DJ who plays it as
a joke at country western competitions here in California. Either post
something here by Thursday or e-mail me by Friday morning since I'll be
seeing here over the weekend.

As the originator of this thread a couple of weeks ago, I would like to
share my newly acquired and distilled knowledge/experience.

Cotton Eyed Joe/Schottische:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The schottische which around here (Texas) is simply known as "The
Schottische" is properly known as "The Sweetheart Schottische."

A very fine CD is available which contains the following selections:

1. CEJ (w/vocal) / Sweetheart Schottische
2. CEJ (w/o vocal) / Sweetheart Schottische
3. CEJ (w/vocal)
4. CEJ (w/o vocal)
5. Sweetheart Schottische

The versions are exactly what I would expect to hear in a C&W dance
hall (ie, no synth or other non-traditional silliness). I used
selection #1 at the wedding reception which prompted my query in the
first place, and everything went swimmingly.

Regrettably, the catalog retailer who let me know about this gave me
a phone # with a typo in it, and since I do not have the CD here with
me at work, I cannot give the correct one. The good news is that the
catalog retailer can be reached at the address:

DBRO...@delphi.com

The CD was $6.98 and well worth it.

Chicken Dance (Bird Dance, Duck Dance, etc...)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This delightful little ditty :-) may be available on CD. It appears
on Brave Combo's album, "World Dance Music," and I do not know
whether the album was ever released as a CD or not.

The version I ended up using is on a 45rpm record which I ordered
from:

Square Dance Roundup
957 Sheridan Blvd
Denver, CO 80214
(303) 238-4810

This version is heavily synthed, but who cares? It is a silly song
anyway. It "worked" just fine at the aforementioned reception, and
I can't think of any possible reason for ever playing this
tune other than a wedding reception.

Thank you to the following folks who replied by email to my query
and whose assistance provided the sources listed above:

Wow, is the Chicken Dance ever _not_ a joke? I can see it now, the
national finals in Chicken Dancing... Maybe a series of classes
and video tapes, "Chicken Dancing for the Clueless."

:-)

Lester

Hey, the Chicken Dance was done at the last World's Championship C&W !

Ok, it was a joke. One of the teachers at the World's had apparently
released a video with line/etc dances, and included the Chicken Dance
on it. Just to embarass him they had the whole audience do the
Chicken Dance. And the MC was making comments through it all:
``and now for the advanced syncopations !!!''

Actually, the "victim" of the Chicken Dance joke at the UCWDC Worlds
Championship was Dave "Dakota" Getty, who is a bigwig in the UCWDC (I think
he's vice president in charge of rules) and who does choreography for a
lot of the top couples. He is also the director of the South Bay UCWDC
event over Labor Day weekend in San Jose, CA. The MC at Worlds was Steve
Zener, who was also the director of the Worlds event. Steve acts as MC at
most of the Southwest regional UCWDC events and is director of two
Southwestern events each year (the Fresno event over Labor Day weekend and
the Southwest Regional Grand Championships in Burlingame over Thanksgiving
weekend), in addition to Worlds. Steve is well known, both for his skills
as an MC and for his sense of humor.

Dave first became a victim of this practical joke at last year's South Bay
event. Since he is rather well known for his choreography, an announcement
was made that Dave was the original choreographer of the Chicken Dance, and
he was pulled out onto the floor and pressured into "performing" the
Chicken Dance (he didn't know it so he had to watch the rest of us and
follow along). Poor Dave has never quite lived this down and had to do
"encore" performances at the Southwest Regionals and at Worlds. So far, he
has avoided any further performances since Worlds, but I'm sure it will
come back to haunt him again.

Just for the record, Dave never released a video with the Chicken Dance on
it, and he doesn't do line dances. He would probably kill anyone who said
he did.
