I cannot find a website that is devoted to Woody Guthrie lyrics, if
you know of one, I would be interested in that as well.
Thank you. JLG
IDA RED
Traditional
Alternate refrains. Use one or the other to begin song and then between
each verse.
Ida Red, Ida Red,
I'm in love with Ida Red.
Ida Red, Ida Red,
I'm just crazy about Ida Red.
Verses. These are just a few. There are many others, some pretty raunchy.
Ida Red, Ida Blue.
I'd a false one, I'd a true.
Ida Red, Ida Green,
Prettiest gal I'd ever seen.
Ida Red, about half grown,
Jumps on a man like a dog on a bone.
Ida Red, she lives in town
Weighs three hundred and forty pounds.
Ida Red, Ida Blue,
Ida bit a hoecake stack in two.
If I'd a-listened to what Ida said,
I'd a-been sleeping in Ida's bed.
Here's two of the milder raunchy verses.
Ida Red, Ida Brown,
Ida ground my pecker down.
Ida thin, Ida fat,
Got a warm fat pussy cat.
That should be enough to get you started. Make up your own as you go
along, or else zip in verses from other songs.

Greetings,
In this instance the DT shows a very abbreviated version of the song.
Actually it's two songs merged, although that's not a problem as "Ida
Red" ofen borrows words from other songs.
Let me repeat te version I posted, as it gives more of a sense of "Ida
Red" than the DT would lead you to believe.

Ida Red, Ida Brown,
Ida ground my pecker down.
Ida thin, Ida fat,
Got a warm fat pussy cat.
And here's another pair of verses that I left out the first time I
posted the lyrics.
Ida Red, Ida Green,
Ida got a washing machine.
Wash your fingers, wash your toes,
Wash a man right down to the hose.
Hey, I got a girl at the head of the creek,
Goin' up to see her 'bout two times a week.
Kiss her on the mouth, sweet as any wine,
Wraps herself around me like a sweet potato vine.
Chorus
Goin' up to Cripple Creek, goin' in a run,
Goin' up to Cripple Creek to have a little fun.
Goin' up to Cripple Creek goin' in a whirl,
Goin' up to Cripple Creek to see my little girl.
Girls up in Cripple Creek about half grown,
Jump on a man like a dog on a bone.
Roll my britches up to my knees,
Wade across Cripple Creek whenever I please.
Chorus
Now Cripple Creek's wide,
And Cripple Creek's deep,
Wade across Cripple Creek before I sleep.
Hills are steep and roads are muddy,
And I'm so dizzy that I can't stand steady.
Chorus
Buffy Sainte Marie sings this traditional song at just about every show to
demonstrate the mouth bow--a Native Canadian instrument that works a bit
like the jaw harp.
Is it the same tune, or do they just borrow some of the words back and
forth?

"Ida Red" and "Cripple Creek" are different tunes, but you can zip quite a
few floating lyrics into either. "Ida Red" tends to get bawdy (some would say
disgusting) pretty quickly. I never heard of "Shootin' Creek," except on the
DT.

issue on his (I believe) first LP "DArlin' Corey" when he played Cripple
Creek & Sang Ida Red. Ida Red was very popular in the Texas/Oklahoma
area, so Bob Wills recorded it. Leadbelly also did a version. >>
Charlie Poole's version of "Shooting Creek" - recorded back in the late 20's -
mixed some words to Cripple Creek (changing the name to protect the
innocent...) AND some words to Ida Red - put to the tune of Cripple Creek.
Such as:
Ida Red, she's a durned old fool,
Tried to put a saddle on a humped-back mule.
Chorus:
Goin up shootin' creek, goin on a run,
Bring my razor and a gattling gun,
The usual words to Ida Red are typically closer to:
Ida Red, Ida Red,
I'm in love with Ida Red
Ida Green, Ida Blue,
Yada, yada, yada - yoo... etc.
