THE RIDDLE SONG
I gave my love a cherry that has no stone,
I gave my love a chicken that has no bone,
I gave my love a ring that has no end,
I gave my love a baby with no cryin.
How can there be a cherry that has no stone?
How can there be a chicken that has no bone?
How can there be a ring that has no end?
How can there be a baby with no cryin?
A cherry, when it's blooming, it has no stone,
A chicken when it's pipping, it has no bone,
A ring when it's rolling, it has no end,
A baby when it's sleeping, has no cryin.

Ma pleesure:
A cherry, in a Manhattan, it has no stone,
A chicken a la king, it has no bone,
A modern novel, it has no end, [how can there be a story]
A baby when it's strangled, has no cryin'.

SIREN:n.One of several musical prodigies famous for a vain attempt to
dissuade Odysseus from a life on the ocean wave. Figuratively,
any lady of splendid promise, dissembled purpose and
disappointing performance.
Ambrose Bierce
A cherry when its blooming, it has no stone
A chicken when its pippin (or pickin' or huh??) it has no bone (when its an
egg, that is)
A ring when it is rolling (or round, or huh?? I blew the question here)
it has no end
A baby when its sleeping has no cryin'
OK, what are the questions *&* answers to the Jewish
"I gave my love a cherry" which I just learned, "Tumbalalika"?
I have them on tape *somewhere*.
Different tune, of course, same idea.
The catch here is that the man says "if you can't answer these you'll
have to marry me" but the woman *can* answer them.
"What burns but is not consumed?"
"A heart"
that sort of thing.
Never under-estimate the power of Digital Tradition:

THE RIDDLE SONG
I gave my love a cherry that has no stone,
I gave my love a chicken that has no bone,
I gave my love a ring that has no end,
I gave my love a baby with no cryen.
How can there be a cherry that has no stone?
How can there be a chicken that has no bone?
How can there be a ring that has no end?
How can there be a baby with no cryen?
A cherry, when it's blooming, it has no stone,
A chicken when it's pipping, it has no bone,
A ring when it's rolling, it has no end,
A baby when it's sleeping, has no cryen.

Alternative verse and question:
I gave my love a story that hae na end (rather than a ring)
A story that I love you, it hae na end
Verse is from my grandmother who learned it from her mother (circa 1900,
eastern KY). She told me that riddle songs (and riddles)had two
purposes--one: to pass the time (before radio, let alone TV); and two, to
test the "wit" of one's intended (perhaps a good use of time?).
JLT
Alan Sherman's version went more or less like this:
I gave my love a cherry that had no stone.
I gave my love a chicken that had no bone.
I gave my love a baby, and one, two, three,
My love got very angry and she said to me,
"I didn't mind the cherry without a stone.
I didn't mind the chicken without a bone.
But when you give a baby, there's just one thing.
You ought to give at least an engagement ring."
