I'm looking at national anthems. I remembered being very moved by the
tune of

Ils viennent jusque dans nos bras
Égorger nos fils!

part of the French one when I heard it sung by a football crowd.

I'm now, though, of the mind that the best national anthem is that of
Israel. The Hatkiva. Very moving. Very endearing.

Growing up in Canada in the 70's, we used to hear the national anthem of the
Soviet Union quite often at international hockey tournaments, beginning with
the landmark Canada-USSR series in 1972.

It seemed quite exotic back then and we all agreed it was a better piece of
music than our own anthem. It's a beautiful melody, but I can't say that I
think much of the lyrics. But when I get right down to it, I'd have to say
that I don't care much for the lyrics of most of the national anthems I've
heard. They all seem to have a little too much jingoism and military zeal
for my taste. I don't generally have much use for any of them.

Maybe someday we'll have a planetary anthem instead. Maybe somebody should
get to work on one.

I'm English (but spent many years in N Wales) but think that is the best
tune I've heard. Have sung something resembling the words (as I have
with Calon Lan, etc.) many times but don't speak Welsh.

As for the worst. I'd award that to God Save The Queen...

Oh, come now. The Star-Spangled Banner is much worse than that.

Consider the English lyrics to Finlandia as a candidate.

Many anthems were written during times of war, so the militaristic
themes are understandable. Musically, my favorite is the French anthem.
Before I discovered folk music, I actually listened to classical music
and one of my favorite pieces was (and still is) the 1812 Overture.
Tchaikovsky managed to showcase the French anthem quite beautifully, and
with live cannons and fireworks - as it is often performed at outdoor
venues - it is one classical performance you can get the kids to sit
through. You just keep telling them to wait until the end.

And this little kid enjoys it to this day.
