Are there any internet folk radio stations in the UK ? Can anyone recommend
an internet folk radio station (UK or otherwise) ?
SPG
BBC has a considerable committment to folk. I think especially BBC
Scotland & Radio 2 in general

check the schedules for Radio Scotland
There's a Listen Now button somewhere but I usually plug the following
directly into Task Scheduler or realplay:
Iain Anderson Mon-Fri 2105-2200 (A different feller from the one here, he
claims. Probably a common name in Scotland.)
Archie Fisher's Travelling Folk Thurs 1915-2100 & Saturday 5:pm (Florida
time)
The good Ewan MacVicar had a show Sunday afternoons but I can't find it
since the past while. Likely gone.
But there are many live & archived & "juke box" sites. Many require a
fast line nowadays and many define "folk" very liberally.
I'll send you my html file of links separately. I've let it fall
considerably out of date, now but it's still pretty good.
As a text file, it comes out:
Here's my own list of basically traditional stuff.

Shoutcast http://www.shoutcast.com/directory/index.phtml gives 33
stations as of 3/2003. (The "genre" search is more restrictive)
About.com streaming links

the definition of "folk" in this case is very liberal.)
A streamed search engine is at http://www.songsearch.net/netradio.htm but
it doesn't include genre: "folk."

I found something else. BBC has a lovely Radio Player.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/ You can select "genre" (Internet
Explorer only, unfortunately) and "Folk & Country." The player gives a
list of all the shows archived and allows play, pause, skip, etc.
Cute.
AOL (!) has a reasonable folk radio station that plays all day. The bbc is
only Wednesday night so I'm looking for someting similar. I suspect there
isn't one.

CKUT's Real Audio feed is available directly from the Folk Roots/Folk

As of July 2003, all CKUT programming is now archived and can be downloaded

Presenter Alan O'Leary has 3 hrs every Friday 6-9pm. The middle hour
concentrates on folk: the first and last hour more your Allman Bros/Little
Feat/roots rock mix, with a few trad tracks sprinkled in there.
The show is available via Real Audio for a week after its broadcast.

There is a lot of other folk on the BBC, available via their website.
Most of it is specifically Celtic, which is a bit of a shame for the
rest of us, but it seems we have to be glad of what folk we can get.

Is that GMT? Likely, I guess since they claim the next show will air on
31/10/2003 and we only go up to a 12-month year (not a 31-month one) here
in Florida.
I don't have my calculator handy but I think that would make the folk

HI
Sorry about the previous empty message, my reader "lost" this one and
sent the other instead!
There are a number of good local programmes available via the BBC
site.
Radio Derby, our local station, provides "Folkwaves" , networked to
the East midlands", for 2 hours on a Monday night, starting at 7pm. It
is presented by Mick Peat, of Peak Arts, and Lester Simpson - of
Coope, Boyes and Simpson. This is well worth listening to.
Incidently Mick Peat is one the organisers of the "In the Tradition"
award, aimed at schoolchildren in the region. The were held a few
weeks ago at a concert in Derby'e Assembly Rooms. The standard of the
six finalists was very high.

Brian
You may find this link useful. I got it froma friend recently.

Geez, that looks like spam... Anyway, it's just a list of
Internet-accessible public radio stations. I make the assumption that
any folk station is probably public, too...

An internet radio station isn't really anywhere, is it?
You might find some of BBC Radio Scotland's programmes worthwhile:
Travelling Folk, Take the Floor, The Reel Blend, Pipeline, Celtic
Connections. They're available over the web for a week after the
radio broadcast (but you need the appalling Real Player to listen,
and I don't think there's any compatible alternative).

At least if you download Real Player from this link you DON'T have to sign
up for their "trial", which you can't cancel online you have to call them:
http://www.realnetworks.com/info/freeplayer/
This topic is often discussed in news:alt.comp.freeware . Most
alternative players still require RealAudio or RealOne to be installed.
Here are two that don't. I haven't tried them.
Jet Audio Basic. A large download, but supposedly it can play
everything including RealAudio.

Abby--Thanks for including WKSU-FM on your list. If you don't already
know about it, WKSU is now producing FolkAlley.com, a 24-hour folk
music streaming service that is hosted by our folk guy, Jim Blum. The
stream is available in RealPlayer, Windows Media, and an MP3 format
(for all of the I-tunes folks). There is a free registration required
to listen from the homepage, but with that you get to post comments to
Jim's blog, an auto-update playlist, and (starting next Monday) a free
monthly e-newsletter. Anyone who visits the site can read Jim's blog,
the daily folk music "buzz," and poke around in our links section.
Thanks for continuing to keep up the good work of folk music! Ann
