Charlie (and all),
I found this on a nashville usenet group (nashville.general, I
believe...):
>In response to the sad news of Walter Hyatt's death in the recent ValuJet
>flight, there will be a few memorial events. Tuesday night at the Sutler
>the usual Tuesday night Barn Dance will be dedicated to Walter. Many
>of Walters friends among the Nashville music community will be offering
>stories and songs celebrating Walter's life. Also, 6 pm Wednesday at the
>2nd Presbyterian Church, 3511 Belmont Blvd, 37215, there will be a
>Memorial Service. The Sutler is donating the proceeds from Tuesday
>night's Barn Dance to The Walter Hyatt Fund. If you wish to donate
>directly, you can send a contribution to The Walter Hyatt Fund to the 2nd
>Presbyterian Church.
I haven't heard for sure, but I'd be willing to bet that something will
be done Wednesday night at Threadgill's in Austin. That's where Champ
Hood holds court when he's not out on the road with somebody, and of
course, he and Walter were longtime friends and colleagues.
Walter, of course will be missed greatly! I just want to say, "Thank you,
Walter, for stopping by here, if only for a short 46 years."

I am not a regular reader of rec.music.folk, but was reading it tonight and
there it was-news of Walter's death. I am stunned, deeply saddened, and
shocked. I met Walter in 1967 in Spartanburg and spent the night many times at
his Mom's log cabin when his grandma lived with them. This was when he was just
beginning to get Uncle Walt's Band together. He and I attended Wofford College
together. One day he jumped out the window of the English class and I don't
recall him returning to class. We would go for rides in his old green 50ish
truck. Many hours we spent in the basement of the Wofford library listening to
his Beatles albums using good headphones. I last spoke with Walter in
Jacksonville, FL at a Lyle Lovett concert a few years ago. He was such a
wonderful, generous, caring person.
My deepest sympathy goes out to his wife Heidi and daughter and young son, and
to his wonderful Mom (if she is still alive).
Was Champ Hood on the plane?
Thanks for the posting from the Nashville usenet group. Do you know when, where
the funeral will be?
So very sad,
Richard Batey
Walter is survived by his wife Heidi, an 8-month-old-daughter Rose, a
6-year-old son Taylor, and a 20-year-old daughter Haley. The family asks
that in lieu of flowers, contributions be sent to

In addition, the Western Beat Barndance at the Sutler on Franklin Pike
will
be held as usual on Tuesday night beginning at 7:00 PM and will be
dedicated to Walter.
Upon learning of Walter's death, Lyle Lovett said: "Walter was a fine
songwriter and craftsman, but it was the way he treated people and how he
thought about people that made him special.... Everybody who ever heard
him
liked him."
He will be sorely missed.

posting problems. The third time, I rec'd the message that the mail was
sent but it still wasn't posted. Is anyone else experiencing similar
problems on this newsgroup?
