Thanks!
P.S. I sent this message earlier today and it disappeared. Does anyone
know why?

With straw, dear William
With what shall I cut it
With a knife, dear William
The knife is too dull
Then sharpen it,
How shall I sharpen it
On the wheel, dear William
With what shall I wet it
With water, dear WIlliam
And how shall I fetch it
With the bucket, dear WIlliam
THERE"S A HOLE IN THE BUCKET

There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza
There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza my own.
Then fix it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry
Then fix it, dear Henry, dear Henry my own.
With what shall I fix it ...
With straw...
But the straw is too dry...
Then wet it ...
With what shall I wet it ...
With water ..
With what shall I fetch it ...
With a bucket ...
There's a hole in the bucket .... ad infinitum
I believe it goes something like this...
Fix it with a straw.
The straw is too long...
Well cut it... with what shall I cut it...
With an axe... the axe is too dull...
Well sharpen it... with what shall I sharpen it...
With a rock... the rock is too dry...
Well wet it... with what shall I wet it...
With water... and how shall I fetch it...
With a bucket... there's a hole in the bucket.
Hope that helps. By the way, who recorded this? I heard it ONCE over
30 years ago (yes this is from memory) and never knew who made the
record.

With a straw dear Henry - and this always had me mystified.
It goes something like:
"There's a hole in the bucket dear Liza etc..
Then fix it dear Henry....
With what shall I fix it....
With a straw...
The straw is too long...
Well cut it dear Henry
With what shall I cut it....
With an axe...
The axe is too dull...
Well sharpen it...
With what shall I sharpen it....
With a stone...
The stone is too dry....
Well wet it.....
With what shall I wet it....
Try water dear Henry....
In what shall I fetch it....
In a bucket....
There's a hole in the bucket...." sorry it's the Readers Digest abbreviated
version - I get a cramp from typing!
The only song I've ever known to go on for longer was Alice's Resaurant and I
made the grave mistake I admitting to a coffee lounge patron some 25 years ago
that I knew the chords.. he sang the whole song.... I learned my lesson that
night <g>

Harry Belafonte recorded the only version I know.

"With a straw, dear Henry, dear Henry, with a straw, dear Henry, with a
straw!"
I think that's Odetta, isn't it?

A straw. Sexual reference, of course.

I *think* it's on Rhino's TROUBADOURS OF THE FOLK ERA compilation, isn't it?

If a *straw* is a sexual reference here, it oughta be POOR Liza, Poor Liza,
shouldn't it?

My friend's two year old will NOT go anywhere in the car unless this

On his "Live at Carnegie Hall" which was issued as a 2-disk box-set on vinyl
in (I'm guessing now) the early 60's. I think that it was Odetta who sang the
part of Liza... Anyone care to clarify?

Delurking here. :) I remember hearing this, probably on the radio
station my folks listened to, WGN in Chicago. As I remember, it was
Belafonte and Odetta, recorded live. The comic timing was wonderful,
as Liza dealt with Henry's denseness.

Best, Barb
It's certainly the story of my daily existence in song!
It's also one of my daughter's favorites, since she was 5. We've perfomed
it as a duo for her school class, changing the names to "ALI" and DADDY".
She also came up with an hysterical varient -
(if you're familiar with the song - as most traditional folk audiences
are...)
Willie: "With what should I fix it dear Liza, dear Liza, etc.
Liza: "With epoxy!"
Willie: "Ohhh, of course!"
Ali Britt-Little, age 7
Sure is a good way to stop those long repetative songs!
