This may be a long shot if not an unusual request but anyway I have been
doing some weeding for a friend and we have been joking about weeds all
day long. He is a bit musical so I wondering if thre are any songs about
garden weeds - I guess they would be satirical - in books or at websites?

You may post to rec.music.folk or to my own email address - see below

Thanks to all in advance

What instantly came to my mind was Dave Mallet's "Garden Song" -"Pulling
weeds, picking stones, we are made of dreams and bones..." Pete Seeger
recorded it (_Circles and Seasons_) and Arlo Guthrie does a very funny
version (teaching it to the audience "the Pete way") on _Precious Friend_.

It's about a lot more than weeds, but the weeds and other annoyances of
gardening are in there.

There is in "Rise Up Singing" a marvelous parody of David Mallet's "Garden
Song." It is called (what else) "Anti-Garden Song," lyrics by Eric Kilburn.
The refrain goes:

Slug by slug, weed by weed,
My garden's got me really teed,
All the insects love to feed upon my tomato plants.
Sunburned face, scratched up knees,
My kitchen's choked with zucchinis
I'm shopping a the A & P next time I get a chance.

It's not strictly about garden weeds, but it's along those lines, and quite
delightful parody.

There's the parody version of the Garden Song, though I don't think it
goes beyond one verse
Bug by bug, weed by weed

My garden's got me really teed
(and so on).

There must be others...

Makem & Clancy did a very cute tune: "Inch by inch. Row by row. How to
make your garden grow."

One of our local singers/songwriters, John Cassell, has a song he does
called "Witchgrass" which covers his planting a garden and one day finding
it all strangled with the stuff.

Well, there's Eric Kilburn's "Anti-Garden Song", a parody of Dave
Mallet's "Garden Song". You can find it in _Rise Up Singing_.

The crabgrass grows, the ragweed thrives
The broccoli has long since died
The only things still left alive are some radishes and beans
My carrot plants are dead & gone
Hear the rabbits sing a happy song
Until you've weeded all day long you don't know what boredom means

Slug by slug, weed by weed
My garden's really got me teed
All the insects love to feed upon my tomato plants...

The "Farm & Prairie" section of _Rise Up Singing_ includes a few
other songs that mention weeds.

There's one about the Young Man Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn. The resulting
weeds made an impression on the lady he was courting.

The resigned gardener's song: 'Weeds Shall Overcome'.

No good, huh?

Howsabout 'Dock of the Bay'? 'The Baron of Bracken'? 'Green Grows the
Sorrel'? 'O'er the Water to Charlock'? 'Queen Among the Heather'? 'Ay Rakin'
O'? 'The Shepherd's Purse'? 'Daisy, Daisy'? 'Jenny Nettles'?
