One of my favorite songs is "Werewolf" by Michael Hurley from his
1972 album "Armchair Boogie". I vaguely recall someone else, perhaps
more famous, also recorded this Hurley song. Does anyone recall
other versions/covers of "The Werewolf"??
Thanks.

The Holy Modal Rounders (good friends of Michael's)
put it on their album The Moray Eels Eat the Holy Modal
Rounders. Not at all famous.

Werewolf was also recorded by the Holy Modal Rounders, sung by Peter Stampfel, on the wholly unavailable Moray Eel Eats The Holy Modal Rounders. I recently did a show with Peter (I am in The Dysfunctionells) and happen to have a live recent recording of Peter singing it. Hurley is touring the country these days and will be in Chicago at Cafe Luna on the 27th of January!

I'm so glad to hear the Michael is still alive and kicking. Peter too, for
that matter. So, you don't think The Moray Eels will come out on CD? Gee,
it was one of my favorite screwed-up albums of all time. Do realize this
was the second mention of it on this newsgroup in the last couple of
months? (The other was by me, of course.) Anyway, it's a good thing I've
got two copies.

The versions by Michael on Armchair Boogie and Peter on The Moray Eels are
quite different, by the way.

the Werewolf was done by the Holy Modal Rounders on their Elektra LP The
Moray Eels Eat The Holy Modal Rounders (long out of print) and
Michael has just rerecorded it for the an album called Wolfways /Out in
Germany only on Veracity Recordings (for now anyways)

Hurley himself has rerecorded "Werewolf" a few times. It was on his
first album (on Folkways) and he redid it again on one of his more
recent ones...either "Blue Navigator" or "Watertower", I forget...

I have heard a cover of it, but I'll be darned if I can remember by
whom.

Supposedly a new Hurley CD is coming out in Germany. God only knows
if it'll ever show up here in the US. His last two releases were both
45s (one came with a comic book)!!
