At a Boiled In Lead concert a while ago, the sound folks were playing
a tape inbetween sets of some electrified-sounding Celtic fiddle music
(with other instruments in the background). I think the name may have
been Mark Spillane or something similar (apologies if I've mangled it).

Anyone know who this might be and what recordings they have?

thanks in advance,

Paul

It could well have been Davey Spillane that you heard. He's a
piper, a really fine piper who worked with Moving Hearts for
a number of years. He now leads his own band, electric, playing
a strange and exciting mix of musics, but still rooted in the
Irish piping tradition.

One of his best recordings is `Atlantic Bridge'---a recording
he made with Bela Fleck on banjo, Albert Lee on electric guitar
and Jerry Douglas on dobro. The rhythm section is mostly ex-members
of Moving Hearts. It's really fine music, although that isn't always
immediately apparent. You have to listen hard and listen for a
while. It's on Tara Records (Tara CD 3019), released a couple of years
ago. He has subsequently put out at least two recordings under the
name The Davy Spillane Band, the most recent one released just before
Christmas. I don't know about availability in the US.

I originally asked about finding the name of a musician playing
progressive Celtic music, and was wrong on several of my guesses.
The correct name and occupation is indeed Davy Spillane, playing
uilleann pipes. His recordings apparently include:

Atlantic Bridge (on Tara Records)
Out of the Air
Shadow Hunter
Pipedreams

Informed sources seem to agree that the first and third are the ones
to check out.

He also apparently played a while back on an album called The Piper's Rock,
on Ceirnini Claddagh records.

Thanks to Bill Haneman, Ken Josenhans, and Jim McCloskey for setting the
record straight...

Are you sure it was fiddle ? It could have been Davy Spillane who pays
Uillean pipes and low whistles exceedingly well with an electric band.
As for recordings, he has made at least 3 with a band called Moving Hearts
plus 3 or more since then under his own name. The only title I can
bring to mind is "Atlantic bridge" which I would highly reccomend.
He was also featured recently with Emmylou Harris, Mary Black and
Dolores Keane in the BBC documentary "Bringing it all home" about
Irish music in the States.

Cheers,

Ed

both are absolutely brilliant - purists might cavil a bit at didgereedoo
(sorry fpr s[pelling) with elcetric guitar santana style (caravanserai period)
but this is the best pipes i've heard in a year...

Davy Spillane, and other members of his band, originally played for 'Moving
Hearts'. The one CD I do have of theirs is called The Storm and is well
worth checking out.

Progressive Celtic music is a bit of an understatement. I have never heard
such a mixture of Blues, Soul, Jazz, Rock and Slide Uilleann piping on the one
album and certainly not from the one guy.

If you get the chance to see The Davy Spillane Band live, do so. My only
comment on his live shows would be for him to lower the volume on the guitar
as it tended to drown out his playing (maybe just the accoustics of the hall
he played in?)

Check him out. You won't be dissapointed.

Loco.
