Here's a somewhat rushed discography for Sandy Denny. These are just the
principal albums; I've left out the session work, THE BUNCH, and probably
lots of other things.

I've crossposted this to rec.music.folk where folks will have all sorts
of suggestions of other artists for you.

Early work
----------
THE ORIGINAL SANDY DENNY -- on the Mooncrest label in the UK.
Very early girl & guitar American folk-revival stuff.
ALL OUR OWN WORK -- Sandy Denny & The Strawbs -- two versions of
this, one LP on the Pickwick label from 1983 and a new
Hannibal issue. Rumors of strings gooping up the Hannibal
issue, but the other is impossible to find.

Denny's first stint with Fairport Convention
--------------------------------------------
WHAT WE DID ON OUR HOLIDAYS
UNHALFBRICKING
LIEGE AND LIEF
The above three are among my favorite albums by anyone.
UNHALFBRICKING is the best. If you are new to Sandy Denny's
work, get these first; these are the albums that made her
reputation.
HEYDAY
BBC radio tapes; sound quality a bit spotty, but worthwhile.
Mostly covers of American singer-songwriters.

Fotheringay
-----------
FOTHERINGAY
her post-Fairport band, I haven't played this in ages but
remember some good stuff on it. Most of the aborted second
Fotheringay album is on the Boxed Set.

Middle of her solo career:
--------------------------
THE NORTHSTAR GRASSMEN AND THE RAVENS
SANDY
I remember these as pretty good. Lots of Richard Thompson guitar.

Stint with Fairport #2:
-----------------------
LIVE CONVENTION (also called A MOVEABLE FEAST in the USA)
RISING FOR THE MOON
This are difficult to find and overall not very good.

Final solo albums:
------------------
AN OLD FASHIONED WALTZ
RENDEZVOUS
I would collect these last.

The Boxed Set:
--------------
WHO KNOWS WHERE THE TIME GOES?
4 LPs, recompiled onto 3 CDs. Lots of otherwise-unavailable
tracks.

Everything except the two albums from the second stint with Fairport should
be in print on CD in the USA or the UK. Send e-mail for my list of sources
for the hard-to-find, price-no-object folk & folk-rock stuff.

A dissenting opinion: Rising for the Moon, while uneven, is nevertheless
a fine album. For Sandy fans, it contains some real gems, such as the
title cut and Swarb's dreamy "White Dress". Definitely worthy of a CD
reissue...

I generally agree with Ken Josenhans' opinions, but I think that 'Moveable
Feast' is a great album. My overall favorite, though, is the original one -
just her guitar and voice with nothing else in the way. I don't remember where
I got it, but it seems to be something of a rarity.
