Yesterday I watched the first episode of The Sandman on Netflix. I
haven't read the original, but the series looks good so far. It got me
wondering if anyone has written a Gaiman-themed filk of "Mr. Sandman."

If nobody else has, here's one based on the Netflix series. The first
four episodes, anyway. It's from the POV of a bystander trying to survive.

Mister Sandman
Lyrics: Gary McGath, Copyright 2022
Music: Pat Ballard, “Mr. Sandman”

Mister Sandman, don’t make me scream,
Don’t leave me stuck in a horrible dream,
You found your kingdom was reduced to rubble,
And everywhere you go, there will be trouble.

Sandman, leave me alone,
I don’t have anything you call your own,
Now I’m not trying to be mean.
Mister Sandman, don’t make me scream.

Mister Sandman, don’t make me scream,
I don’t want to have any part in your scheme.
The only thing I want is never to be
Between you and your sand and helm and ruby.

Sandman, it’s not my fight,
I just hope I will live through tonight.
Now I’m not trying to be mean.
Mister Sandman, don’t make me scream.

I haven't seen the show or read the book, but the song is terrifying.
Vwd.

MR. SANDMAN
by Lee Gold, Xenofilkia #6, August, 1989
to the tune of "Mr. Sandman", only this time changing a few of the words
so it refers to Logan's Run

Mr. Sandman, check in your book.
My flower's blacker each time that I look.
My mirror says that I've lost my pimples,
And I think that my face has got a wrinkle!

Mr. Sandman, I'm all alone,
Ain't got no buddies -- I'm on my own.
So please turn on your magic beam.
Mr. Sandman, send me a dream.

I guess we also need a "Mr. Postman" one, about the David Brin novel and
later movie.

I'm very fond of Kanefsky's song about that novel.

I had no idea that the Beatles had covered that song, but they
apparently did. The original recording was by the Motown group The
Marvelettes:

The version I remembered was probably the one by the Carpenters. All of
these are on youtube.

Wow, this is a good song, though I'm not familiar with "The Coachman".

Sang this one at MASSFILC. Lee, I'm giving it my OK for inclusion in
Xenofilkia if you want it.
