Nobody's been using it for anything, lately. More precisely, the latest
non-spam seems to have been April 7th.

If I recall correctly, the original reason for using alt.music.filk for
such purposes was that the FIDOnet group rec.music.filk was gated to was
subject to certain FIDOnet rules. This no longer applies.

I subscribe to both newsgroups and am happy to read stuff on both.

I'm also still keeping half an eye on both... when there's actually any
activity on a.m.f. Nothing much has happened there in Quite Some Time,
but if you start something it may reboot for a while.

(I've never got around to tracking down the Ballad of Eskimo Nell.
Simply knowing it existed -- and having it referenced in passing in some
stories -- seems to suffice; I've assumed it isn't actually creative
enough to be worth making the effort. Unless, perhaps, one is attempting
to do something creative with it such as this crossbreed.)

You can sing it to the tune of Hope Eyrie. Ouch!

I did some studies for an illustrated version Ned Brooks was going to
print. Then I suppose the project stalled. After a while it was hard
finding places to illustrate that didn't involve oversized genitals, but
I found several suitable moments.

Ted Johnstone (who wrote SF under his real name of David McDaniel) used
to sing "The Balad of Eskimo Nell" and I enjoyed hearing it. There
are a lot of versions of it on the Web. The one at
http://www.heretical.com/pubs/esknell.html looks sort of like the one
Ted used to sing.

It was printed in Filthy Pierre's Microfilk, which I have.

Regardless of the charter, which I don't think anyone really cares about
as a legal document (people like Andrew Cuomo just want all newgroups
shut down), it's a useful distinction to have for the sake of people who
might want to see "offensive" stuff.

I had to look up "quim" to figure out why there was an issue, other than
the possibility of where an "Eskimo Nell" discussion might go.

FWIW, speaking as the person who wrote the silly thing, the /only/
reason that line got in there WAS the situation with FIDOnet, which
provided most of the traffic at the time. I closed down the FILK
echo/rec.music.filk connection when there were only a few posters left
on the FIDO side, and somebody opened a second link to it and caused the
Dupe Loop from Hell until I shut them down and decided enough already.
This also freed me from being Moderator since that was pure Fidonet;
we've always been unmoderated in the usenet sense. So I expect it's
just up to us to do whatever we please anyway. :)

alt.music.filk will be there anyway, just because you can't close an alt
group. I'd like to see real traffic in there: I've not been following
it for over a year because it had gone to pure spam. Just re-opened the
subscription yesterday and I'm seeing one or two comments a day, all
germane, so I shall go back to following it.

Well it is one of my favorite poems, all 60 plus verses. It contains
most sexual orientations and or perversions known when it was created.
It is a ballad of the triumph of an unlikely heroine. First 20 verses,
our anti-heros, next 20 confrontation, next 20 more or less, the
victor crowing. I think it has creativity, but I am its fan.

And Nell is vulgar. When I was looking at dirty songs, I kept being
disapointed, seldom were they impressive. Nell is the only one that,
should poems be rated, would rate an X.

And thanks for the afm reminder, after routinely reporting the
cahalan's troll as spam, I think that I may need to report some real
spam to get my presumed creditability rating up.

I followed the link that Lee provided and read "Nell." I had never
heard it before. What struck me wasn't that it was vulgar, but that it
was about rape at gun point! And that the "solution" to rape at
gunpoint was to s***w the rapist until he was drained and then insult
him. WTH???!!! I found it inexcusably nasty. And not enjoyable in any
way. But then, that's just my take.

You might like this better. From mudcat.org:
THE MAID ON THE SHORE 2

There was a fair damsel all crossed in love
And she fell very deep in despair
All the way she could find to ease her sad mind
Was to walk all along on the shore
O, the shore, to walk all along on the shore.

There was a sea-captain who sailed the seas 'round
And he fell very deep into love-o
"I'll die, I'll die!" the sea-captain cried
"If l can't get that maid on the shore,
O the shore, if l can't get that maid on the shore"

"Your captain has jewels and your captain has gold
And your captain has costly array-o
All these he'll give to his jolly seamen
If they'll bring him that maid on the shore,
O the shore, if they'll bring him that maid on the shore."

"Our captain has jewels, and our captain has gold.
And our captain has costly array-o
All these he'll give, and we'll please it we can
And we'll bring him that maid on the shore,
O, the shore, we'll bring him that maid on the shore."

After much persuasion on board she did come
And the captain he set her a chair-o
He invited her down to his cabin below
Singing, "Farewell, sorrow and care,
O care, farewell, sorrow and care."

"I'll sing you a song if you all think it best"
And how she made them all stare-o
She sang it so sweet, so neat and complete
That she sang all the seamen asleep,
O asleep, sang all the seamen asleep.

She robbed them of jewels, she robbed them of gold
She robbed them of costly array-o
Of the captain's broadsword, she made her an oar
And she paddled her boat to the shore
O, the shore, she paddled her boat to the shore.

"Oh, were my men sleeping, or were my men mad
Or were they sank in despair-o?
She deluded my men and myself also
And again she's a maid on the shore,
O, the shore, again she's a maid on the shore."

"Your men were not sleeping, your men were not mad
Nor were they sank in despair-o
l deluded your men and yourself also
And again I'm a maid on the shore,
O, the shore, again I'm a maid on the shore..'

I might like it better, indeed. Although I am unclear on the point of
this song. She is a thief; did the sailors in some way deserve to be
robbed? Female empowerment should not come at the expense of decent men.

Drat -- the other version on Mudcat makes it clearer. The captain was
going to have his way with her, then turn her over to his men.

THE MAID ON THE SHORE

There was a young maiden, who lived all alone
Her beauty it did shine so clear-o
And all she could find for to ease her sad mind
Was to wander alone on the shore the shore
Was to wander alone on the shore (2x)

And there was a young captain, who plowed the salt seas
Let the wind blow high, blow low-o
This beautiful maiden he chanced for to spy
"Don't I wish that I had her on board on board
Don't I wish that I had her on board." (2x)

The steward he ran and he lowered the boat
And quickly he rode it to shore o
And these were the very first words he did say:
"Fair maid, won't you venture on board on board? (2x)

By coaxing, persuading, she entered the boat
And quickly he rowed her on board o
Our captain, he smiled and spat out his chew
Saying "Fair you well sorrow and care and care." (2x)

The captain he poured out the richery wine
That sparked so bright and so clear-o
Saying "First you will lie in my arms all this night,
And then I'll hand you to my crew my crew" (2x)

"Oh thank you, oh thank you," this maiden replied
"That's just what I've been waiting for-o.
For I've grown so weary of my maidenhead
As I wandered alone on the shore ."

She sat herself down in the stern of the ship
Her voice was so fair and so clear-o
She sang them so sweet, so neat and complete
She sang captain and sailors to sleep."

She robbed them of silver, she robbed them of gold
She robbed them of costly wares-o
Our captain's broad sword, she used for an oar
To row herself back to the shore. (2x)

"Oh were me men crazy, or were they all drunk?
Oh were they sunk deep in despair-o?
To see her get away with her beauty so gay
Don't I wish that I had her once more."

And yonder she stands all alone on the strand
A-waving her handkerchief, fair o
Saying: "You are the captain that sails the salt seas
And I'm still a maid on the shore the shore,
And I am the maid on the shore."
