Hi,
I would like to consider changes to my future filks.
But I would strongly like your feedback and consideration.
I do not want to do something that would be not accepted by LAFA.

I would like to get more time for filking at my place.
One choice would be to cancel the dinner and start at 6pm.
Another choice would be to have the dinner start a half hour early,
and acknowlege that even with carrows slow service every one was out
by 6:30 and a half an hour earlier start would get the filk going
aprox at 6pm.
Another choice would be to leave every thing as is, and start the
dinner at 5 as usual.

What would you say? What would please you? What can you not tolerate.
If you have not gone to a LAFA filksing, please ignore this.

Well, it takes us 75-90 minuts to get to your home.
If you start the filk at 6 PM, that would mean our finishing dinner
by 4;30 PM and setting off for your home. Or arriving at your home with
something to eat for dinner and eating it there in between songs.

My guess is that some people would choose each option.
Are you okay for having people arrive and eat sandwiches in your living
room? Or break out midnight snacks because a meal at 3:30 PM left them
getting hungry later in the evening?

i.e. at 4:30 PM, with dinner arriving around 4:45-5 PM.

I didn't think Carrows had slow service.
I thought the waitress was very polite and very prompt.

The Phoenix Filk Circle does a pot-luck dinner. Don't know how well
that would work for LA. Last time I went to a LAFA filk was probably
8-9 years ago. (the drive from Phoenix is a bit much)

That's also the way it usually works with housefilks at my house.
(Singing starts around 5:00 and there is a dinner break somewhere around
7:30. Dinner conversation often opens with, "So, has anyone read any
great books in the last month?")

There's an apt-get for that.

Some LAFA hosts do a pot luck dinner (the Tyras, Terry Brussel).
Of course that usually involves borrowing the host's stove and/or
microwave to heat things up. Sean's wife usually goes out when he hosts
a filk, and I'm not sure if she'd mind cleaning up after filkers cooking
in her kitchen or even eating off of paper plates they brought.

We used to host a take-in from local restaurants (some of which
delivered) pre-filk dinner, but again that meant being okay with washing
dishes and silverware (or throwing away paper dishes and plastic ware)
afterwards.

Back in the 80s the filk started at around 2pm, with a dinner break
where some would go out for food and others would eat at the filk site.
Don't know if any one would want to do that today though.

The southern Ontario filks almost all start at 2 pm, with a dinner
break around 6:30. The host decides if dinner will be potluck or
order in; we'd never go out as others might be arriving during that
time.

I think that if we start early enough to get to Carrows at 5 (instead
of 5:20 as we did this time), we can have dinner at 5 and still start
the filk at 6 (or maybe 6:05).

I think I would rather "skip" the pre-filk dinner (maybe bring dinner
with us) rather than try eating before 5.

But pre-filk dinners are very much at the option of the host. If you
don't care to have one, you don't have schedule it. People are capable
of feeding themselves (or so I believe).

So far Sean hasn't reported discussing this stuff with his (non-filker)
wife to see what her reaction would be to filkers eating a take-out
dinner in the family home or to eating a potluck in the family home.

That's the usual MASSFILC structure too. Often with the monthly business
meeting scheduled right before dinner, letting hunger encourage brevity.

Potluck is by far the most common in recent years, though this does run
the risk of all appetizers and munchies and not enough real food. Some
hosts like to provide a main dish (typically something easy and
reasonably-priced for manymany), but that is by no means expected. It's
been a while since we've ordered out from the filk, but that's certainly
another alternative.

It's host's call whether we use disposable or reusable ware or a random
mixture of both. (Personally, I don't mind dishwashing, and many of us
have machine assistance.) We used to be better about bringing a box of
disposable plates/forks to each meeting so there was a rolling supply of
those; that seems to have largely died off.

Any answer that encourages folks to host and/or attend is a good answer.

... of course, if you're trying to keep strictly kosher or halal, that
may affect ability to host the meal unless you're willing to cook it or
coordinate closely with folks bringing stuff. But most folks who have
those constraints already have practical techniques for managing them.

And the host can certainly request that allergens not be brought. (Just
as the host should advise if allergens or other hazards are present.)

(sorry for not getting back to this post faster).
Well, I am looking for options that will work with the people that
attend.
I would not mind and suspect that Linda would not mind people eating
in the kitchen.

So far sounds like skipping the dinner and starting at 6 would make
it.
And Just starting at 6 and hanging out at Carrows before that might
work.
Barry,
If the announcement had been made, others would have delayed the end
of Carrows and the start of the filk.
So the timing is not your direct fault. The last 2 times before
started the filk at 6:30 pm.

Actually the real limits of the filk are the guitarists.
And sometimes we have done more acupella filks here than at other
places.
I was real happy to have Karen here, she allowed you some relief time.
