Just V. Just because a lot of people liked the remake of Battlestar,
doesn't mean they can just grab any old piece of #$%! sf show and
revive it. I mean, if someone's gonna take a show and revive it, why
don't they grab something good, like, oh, say, FIREFLY?! Wouldn't it
be nice to see more episodes of that, instead of this tripe? Yeesh.

What Karen is exhibiting is known as "anticipatory disappointment".
That's where you express your disappointment in a coming product before
it makes its debut. It usually comes in two forms; in one case the fear
is that the new version will be different than the original; in the
other the fear is that the new version will be the same. Karen is
indulging in anticipatory disappointment based on the fear that the new
"V" will be the same as the unlamented original.
In technical terms Karen Rodgers is a grump. Part of the reason why
we're all fond of her.

For what it's worth, I've known Karen for years, and find her a
delightful and sweet person to talk with and to sing in circle with.
She's also a responsible and honorable concert performer (who shows up
on time and sings good stuff, including some of her own songs).
I first encountered Alan Kellogg what I consider a long time ago, and
been in contact with him now and then over the years, but I don't know
him well enough to generalize about him.

I've been a distant fan of Karen's theory related posts to other newsgroups and

Still, there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the premise. It's all down
to the execution. Given the recent success of Battlestar Galactica, it's
certainly *possible* they'll turn that mess into something watchable.
Possibly even something of quality.

Considering all the awful things that get done just continuing a _good_
series I think I prefer them working on something where there is nothing
to lose. Season two of "Twin Peaks" comes to mind.

Now I"ve watched Firefly, and I've watched Battlestar,
The first couple of seasons of Battlestar were very entainering. Firefly
is more thought provoking.
Thus, Firfly is the better show
But Battlestar will bring in more $$$$$$ and as you know $$$$$$ talks.
Now Babylon-5 That is a show I'd like to have seen more of but alas, no
cable or sat where I lived.

Virtuality, Vampire Diaries or Day One. And Dollhouse, Lie to me and
Numb3rs are favorites here, as well. Also Smallville. But like you, we
are keeping an eye out for shark jumping. It is long past the time when
clark should be flying regularly and we look forward to seeing him in
the tights (which we expect to happen in the last episode.)

I don't disagree with this criteria. (I can't evaluate it as I have yet to
watch the new Battlestar Galactica, despite being told by many whose

But I'm a huge Firefly fan, and something would have to be quite good to
eclipse it in my opinion as the best SF TV show ever.

first time, I can say that I can think of nothing that would drive DVD
sales of Season 3 more than giving away Seasons 1-2 for free. :)

Well... a)"The writers" were mostly JMS, who has already _told_ that
story and has furthermore has said publically that he's not doing ANY
more B5 projects unless the studio is willing to fund a movie and do it
properly.
b)Andre Katsulas (G'Kar) and Richard Biggs (Dr. Franklin) are dead and
thus not re-castable, and I daresay a number of the other actors are
busy doing other things.
c)Joe worked out the whole universe past and present pretty much; if
properly funded (see a) he could always tell ANOTHER story instead of
remaking the first one. Crusade would of probably worked out fine if it
hadn't gotten pulled apart in the middle of an Atlanta/Los Angeles turf
war.
Personally, like a lot of people I want to see the rest of FIREFLY.
Whedon didn't even get to the first "things aren't what they seem" arc
plot twist... and you KNOW there was going to be at least one.

both tried to make they had more input than the other guy... and while
LA understood that the best way to get JMS to do stuff is to wind him up
and stand back (he does know what he's doing - B5 routinely came in on
time and under budget because of things like intelligent scheduling
almost eliminating overtime), Atlanta was into micromanaging and making
constant suggestons while, from the sound of it, being totally
unfamiliar with science fiction. The result was Not Pretty. (Though
when someone suggested there be a scene involving sex on the bridge, and
Joe promptly had a Giant Space Jellyfish hump the ship, it was at least
funny.)

Alas, When JMS concieved the show he decided it should run only so long,
and that is how long it ran. It ended where it was supposed to end.
Much as I'd like to see it again, it ended when it was supposed to.
One of the chats I had with him was due to my tendency to use FICTION to
illistrate a point.. I had done so using one of the B-5 plot elements
(Bester as I recall) and I got flamed because it is Fiction and thus can
not happen. JMS and I hung our electrons in the same forum at the time
(I am still there) and I relayed a much watered down version of the
flame to him along with some of the real life history that I felt was
behind Bester and crew..... He filled in about 3 times the history I
knew. I did a cut and paste back to the newsgroup where I got flamed.
I never saw the flamer again.
You see.. Though B-5 IS fiction... Several plot elements have a very
solid basis in genuine world history.. The kind you study in school.
Seems I'd not only slept through more than one history class.. I paid
attention when I was not sleeping. The flamer had failed to do that
(pay attention). OH well.

The other was used on Mod-Squad, 2 writers taking turns.
Having a stable of writers, can work out well, but more than not the
phrase "Too many cooks" applies.

Agreed. Dark Shadows had a stable of three writers: Sam Hall, Gordon
Russell, and Art Wallace, with Wallace (and Dan Curtis) providing
overall story arc.
Ted Johnstone (Dave McDaniel) founded an unofficial "Art Wallace Fan
Club". The symbol was a con-button showing a fist, thumb pointed down,
(as in "thumbs down") and the motto was "Spare them Nothing".
Lee and I still recite that as a sort of mantra whenever we see a
particularly tasty piece of writing on a TV series we watch (e.g.,
Dollhouse).

Because of the uncertainty going into season 4 about whether there
would be a season 5, JMS squashed the remaining 2 years of story arc
into season 4. That meant 1) season 4 was compressed and unnatural;
and 2) season 5 was mostly filler. Ivanova's departure didn't help
with that, either.

The original Star Trek was a mixed bag, but had some very good
episodes written by writers who were just passing through. Theodore
Sturgeon, Robert Bloch, and Harlan Ellison all wrote memorable
episodes, for example.

True. And (I've heard) when TNG got started Roddenberry decreed that
there would be NO REAL SCIENCE FICTION WRITERS this time. Apparently he
found them hard to work with. Or something.
