In recognition of the Wiki blackout

Today is Wiki blackout day relating to bills
in congress that could affect filkdom.
On that note I'm going back in the time machine
to dig out a related song I posted to alt.music.filk
back in the mid 90's.

But there's big demand for

So should
Congress censor the net?

There once was a business called Megaupload
Its owner a Mr. Dotcom

But alas.. It is not the 1st victim of said law. and several other
upload sites like Filesonic have "Gone dark" in the interest of self
preservation.

I personally feel these sites should qualify for a common carrier
exception. If USPS or UPS delivers a box to my, or your, house and
inside that box is a bunch of pirate CD's... Do they send the owners of
USPS or UPS to prison? NO,

So why Mr. Dotcom?

Because it involves skeery new technology stuff, and is therefore
suspect. Why, in my day...

Indeed. There is a new internet bumper sticker that says: You don't get
to destroy the internet just because it doesn't fit your business model.

That's a paraphrase - but it's pretty close.

Actually.. I recall a few years ago they set a standard for Serivce
hosts. At that time the internet, as we know it today, was .. not (yet)
though the infrastructure was forming up, but there were many on-line
services such as AOL (Well it was still Q-link back then) Compuserve,
prodigy, and some others.

Compuserve was found to be a common carrier, Mostly because we do
basiclaly NO editing w/o permission (Well, might make a URL into a
clicky now days, or correct a spelling error, but for the most part we
do not edit, and for sure WE DO NOT CENSOR messages, other than if a
message is offensive or in violation of something like HIPPA (Say it
contains personal info about a teen) we move it out of public view.

But another service provider was in the habbit of editing messages big
time, If it had offensive language they removed it, Most of the time,
and when they missed one, they lost in court.

Mr. DotCom should only be held responsable for files he uploads and/or
files where he has ignored a take down request.
