Filipino Opera Singers

studying to become an opera singer. I'm also half filipino (my father is
a filipino and my mother is american). I'm wondering if anyone knows of
any filipinos (past or present) who are opera singers. There
are many korean, japanese, and chinese singers who sing at the
Metropolitan Opera as well as other places, and I read about them often
in Opera News (magazine), but I've never read or heard of a filipino
opera singer.

There's Evelyn Mandac who had two international
recordings - as soprano in Carmina
Burana (Seiji Ozawa conductor ) - Papillon label and another one with

Locally, the opera scene is rich since foreign opera companies came to the Philippines as early as the middle of the 19th century. =
There's a lot of opera written:
Noli Me Tangere which
was an adaptation of Jose Rizal's novel - it was the first full-length
grand opera in Tagalog composed in 1953 by Felipe Padilla de Leon, libretto by Guillermo E. Tolentino (the famous sculptor) and stag=
ed by Morli Dharam.
Binhi ng Kalayaan by Eliseo Pajro and libretto by Ricardo R. Pascual. Again the story is Rizal based - this time on the events that=
led to his martyrdom. Performed by who's who in Philippine opera like the late Aurelio Estanislao (Rizal), Remedios Bosch-Jimenez =
(Josephine), Conching Rosal, Don David, Jimmy Melendres and Rodolfo Rivas.

Diego Silang - based on the life of the Filipino hero from Vigan in the Ilocos. Again by Alfredo Buenaventura with Rodolfo Reyno as=

Alamat ng Pinya, again by Buenaventura, libretto by Feliciana A. Reyes - inspired by a Mindanao myth about the origin of the pineapp=

Princesa Urduha also by Buenaventura, libretto by Inigo Ed. Regalado
Hinilawod by Buenaventura, libretto by Inigo Ed. Regalado - based on a Panay epic, a tale of romance between two islanders.
El Filibusterismo bly Felipe de Leon, libretto by Anthony Morli. Adaptation of Jose Rizal's second novel.
Florante at Laura based on the epic poem of Francisco Balagatas - by Lucino T. Sacramento, libretto by Servando de los Angeles. Inf=

There are several organizations that promote opera (not sure if they are still alive though): Jovita Fuentes Musicultural Society, =
the Opera Guild of the philippines, the Opera Chorus of the Philippines, Inc., the Philippine Opera and Concert Society and teh nati=
onal Opera Foundation of the Philippines.
There are some more but I am just too lazy to type ... there was even a Tagalog version of Verdi's La Traviata translated by Florent=
ino Ballecer - also Cavalleria Rusticana, Lucia di Lammermoor and Rigoletto have been translated and performed as well as Mignon, Un=
Ballo in Maschera, Tales of Hoffman and Merry Wives of Windsor. Carmen was also translated.

London by Lilia Reyes, Filipina soprano based in Italy and married
to an Alitalia pilot. I have lost contact with her but she used to
give master classes in South America.
There is also a soprano surnamed David in Australia somewhere.
I've met her in London before.
BTW is the Filipino story about Montserat Caballe true? What I
heard was that she was 'discovered' by a wealthy Filipino who
funded her operatic training and that she therefore has a soft
spot for Filipinos.

Back in the 80's my dad had a friend who sang in Europe as a Tenor. I
forgot his name though. I'll ask him when I see him for Christmas.
