Lea is one of Asia's best and is its most well-known stage
singer/actress today. The British recognized this fact by giving her
an Olivier Award as Best Actress, becoming the first Asian to be so
honored. That was a slap in the face of the Americans who colonized
the Philippines, so they reluctantly gave Lea a Tony Award as Best
Actress (to save face). But the truth still hurts that Americans
indeed dislike Filipino singers: Lea Salonga, upon relocating to the
USA from England, scored no Top 40 hit in the American charts, not
even an entry in the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. (NT) -- Jacob
Smith, 12:34:25 09/14/04 Tue
you know what ... because Filipino singers can be at par if not better
in many respects than some other US based singers. in the guise of
"protectionism" (artists' and performers' guild) as a means to ward
off foreign competition, many Pinoy talents have never been given that
recognition that they deserve. even if there are sponsors who are
willing and have dedicated enormous resources meant to promote a Pinoy
talent no one has ever succeeded thus far. music industry analysts
would say "oh there is nothing original in those songs. Pinoy pop is
not unlike its American counterpart", so there. (NT) --
beautywatchnyc, 14:05:45 09/14/04 Tue
true but canada's celine dione penetrated american pop kahit na
canadian pop has nothing original too. our very own ilocano from
isabela freddie aguilar had several hits in many european countries
but not in the usa. what does that tell you? (NT) -- it means america

Choose a song not by its chartbusting power but by its overall appeal
to you as a person - its message, melody, etc. You can have a No. 1
hit song even though you may not have a good singing voice. All you
need is money and promotion. Don't rely on listeners' requests to
propel your song to the charts. A music industry insider says you can
"bribe" radio stations to play a certain singer's single (song) at an
increased frequency in order to place in the charts. When single CD's
were still abundant, sales were the sole criterion for charting but
now it is more on radio airplay. (NT) -- u need funds baby one more

Tama! I have orgasm everytime I hear Victor Wood sing "Release Me,"
"Cheryl Moana Marie" and "Malaguena," never mind his Pinoy accent.
Same with Lea. Her duet with Charlie Masso titled "I Still Believe"
ranks high up there with American love duets like "You Are the Love of
My Life" and "Endless Love." If only it were released internationally.

How can you forget the eternal voice of Eva Eugenio whose soulful,
emotional rendering of tunes endeared her to millions of Flip hearts
in the 1980s? Coritha, too. Her clear, powerful voice in "Sierra
Madre" can't be topped even by Regine and Lea or any other Filipina
singer, save for Sylvia La Torre perhaps. IMHO, Ate Vi can't really
sing; ditto with Sharon kaya lang she has many fans. Lerma? Elsa? They
don't strike me as familiar names at all. I like Imelda Papin, too, as
well as Samantha Chaves (LOve Me), Jasmine Trias, Jocelyn Enriquez and
world-famous opera soprano Evelyn Mandac. (NT) Rahul Mabango Na

sharon has what you may call a "cultured" voice which means "learned"
as taught by voice tutors in "music" or private lessons. i've learned
that coritha (socorro martinez in real life) is an "heiress" to a
fortune in mindoro (cattle raising, ranch by any implications!) and
that she was formerly a student at UP-Diliman but had to transfer
elsewhere (st joseph or was it at trinity at cathedral heights, qc)
when UP dropped her out because of her political views at the height
of the student power in RP). (NT) -- beautywatchnyc, 09:05:22 09/12/04

how did i know this tidbit. i have a friend in bukidnon (i was on
vacation in what i could swear one of the most breathtaking places
i've been to in rp) who runs a ranch while his dad also owns one in
mindoro. in retrospect i like coritha's songs. and i still have her
albums in my "rare" finds. (NT) -- beautywatchnyc, 09:05:53 09/12/04

Thanks, beauty. I've been searching for Coritha's solo albums on
www.tatakrp.com pero wala. BTW, my family tree lists Martinez na
part-Spanish daw but I don't really care about that Spanish che-che
bureche. LOL! (NT) -- Rahul Mabango Na, 18:48:56 09/13/04 Mon
paano naman eh hindi mo na kailangan pa dahil the proof is "the line
of your nose" ayan hah compliment yan. mestiza ang dating ni Socorro
Martinez my friend swears to that. i've also learned from an insider
(true ito hah!) coritha even attempted once to enlist in BbP but she
wasn't given the "warm" reception due to her
anti-establishment/political views at the time. but i agree with you.
there is a certain timbre in her voice that sets her apart from her
contemporaries. I have a few solos of her in my "collectors bureau".

thanks for the tatak pilipino link. do you know where i can find
CD's/casette tapes of luisa tapales and dalisay alba? in april 1924,
tapales became the first filipina to sing the title role of puccini's
"madame butterfly" in italy and went on to conquer other european
countries. dalisay alba debuted at the new york city opera in 1948 and
later performed in italy, spain and france. i got these music tidbits

my take:- music should be appreciated according to its kind. this goes
like a cliche but i's not fair (the height of myopia!!!!) to compare
one singer vs another if you do not provide a criteria by which these
tunes or singers should be judged at. this explains why songs are
categorized accordingly ie pop, jazz, hard rock, soft rock, r&b's,
country so on and so forth. this also explains why the rise (and
subsequently "fall" by oblivion but mostly because of age!) of
divergent plurality and diversity of voices in the industry. (NT)
beautywatchnyc 07:09:39 09/12/04 Sun
there are millions and millions of fans around the world each with
his/her own type/s of preference. music is pure beauty in itself even
in its raw form. i don't think we should limit ourselves alone to 1 or
2 or 3 singers with a specific singing style. that is not just right.
while we appreciate the singling talents of local singers many of them
have gone to conquer the world stage by winning int'l singing tilts,
that streak of fortune should not make us all myopic re the great
singing talents the world has ever produced. (NT) -- beautywatchnyc,

They may have the notorious IMSCF syndrome, but you should have
included such part-Pinoy/Pinay warblers as Christina Aguilar,
Thailand's most popular female singer. She is half-Ilocano,
half-French. Baklitas, diva? Also the most well-known female soloist
of Australia, Kate Ceberano. That Sugahbabe singer from England, too.

and Wind beneath my wings. I guess that's why the CD flopped (NT)

"Phil Singer" <filipin...@hotmail.com> wrote in message
news:d9370e1b.04091...@posting.google.com...
Lea Salonga is a great singer, but she never does the kind of music that
winds up on the Billboard Hot 100 singles. Top 40 lists are determined by
sales & radio requests. No one cares if the singer is Pinoy or whatever. It
is purely a popularity and sales. Either the record sells or it doesn't.
Salonga was available to Americans on "Miss Saigon" cast recordings, but not
very many people wanted to hear THOSE songs more than once, if at all. At
least not the people who buy CDs.
Anyone who knows music is familiar with Maria Callas and Luciano Pavarotti,
two of the undisputed greatest operatic voices in history. Yet neither have
had, nor will ever have, a "top 40" hit single. Like Lea, they don't do
highly commercial pop music. Please remember, that having a top-selling
record does NOT mean that the performer is a great artist. It only means
that the record sold.
Martin Nievera is a surperb singer and showman. But he is unlikely to have a
hit record in the U.S., because most of his recordings are covers of hits by
other artists, often songs that were over-exposed on the U.S. radio by the
original artists. To have a hit here, he'll have to have an original song,
and people will have to like it a lot. Unfortunately, singers like Martin -
Johnny Mathis being a good example - are not what is in style right now.
It is worth remembering that the "top 40/hot 100" songs are those popular,
mostly, amomg pre-teens to mid-20s; older adults just do not, overall, spend
that much on CDs. It is not quite as important for a person in their 30s,
perhaps a new parent, to be the first to get the newest recording.
I like a lot of Pinoy/Pinay singers. But they are not singing what is
popular in the U.S. A group like the Eraserheads might have a chance,
musically, but not singing Tagalog, of course. Unfortunately, too many
"stars" are not much more than high-quality karaoke singers. You won't see
someone's imitation of Whitney Houston singing "The Greatest Love of All"
hitting the charts in the U.S.
You say "protectionism"..."a means to ward off foreign competition"?
That is ridiculous, paranoid & even laughable.
Consider the following:
Beatles, Elton John, Rolling Stones, BeeGees, Abba, Bjork, Julio Iglesias,
Dave Clark Five, Zombies, Rod Stewart, Ozzie Osborne, Eric Clapton,
Queen...need I continue?
The mysterious, unnamed "artists' and performers' guild" seems to have
failed in keeping these incredible hit-makers off the charts. Maybe these
artists did something original and were marketed well.
Sponsors & enormous resources will not make a hit record, if no one buys it.
French superstar Johnny Hallyday has had innumerable hits over and over for
40 years, has been in several American and international hit films, has had
HUGE amounts of money invested, yet has never had a hit record in the U.S.,
where he is virtually unknown. Yet almost everyone over the age of 25 in
Europe knows who he is.
People don't "deserve recognition";
they get attention (sell).
This is NOT, I repeat, mean that the performer is a great artist.
I like Martin, Eraserheads, Kuh, Lea, and Lani. There are others who
ocasionally shine. However, some of the "stars" can barely sing, and dance
as clumsily as penguins. I won't insult these sincerely hard-working,
well-meaning performers by naming them. But you will never, I assure you,
see their names in Billboard either.
Just my opinion.
Lolo Mike
Oh, in the Philippines, we have a lot of that. Sexbomb Girls,
