I am learning how to speak Tagalog and have discovered (what seems to
be) an unusual word. "Sunrise", when strictly translated, is 2 words,
according to a friend of mine. Can anyone tell me what those 2 words
are?
(This newsgroup was the only one that I could find when I searched on
'Filipin', Pilipin', or 'Phillipin'. I apologize if I put this
message in the wrong group.
Thanks,
Sun - Araw
Rise - Bangon
i think your friend meant:
sunrise(dawn) => bukang liwayway (really deep tagalog)
buka means open or spread/blossom out
liwayway means sunlight or rays of the sun
sunrise(the rising of the sun) => pagsikat ng araw (not deep at all)
also:
sunset(twilight) => takipsilim (deep)
sunset(the setting of the sun) => paglubog ng araw (not deep)
midnight => hatinggabi
morning => umaga
night => gabi
noon => tanghali
Hindi ba "bungang araw"? Hehehehe!

If by "sunrise" you mean "dawn," then the two-word Tagalog translation is
"bukang-liwayway."
It is always refreshing to find a foreigner trying to learn Tagalog.
If it's not imposing too much, may i ask what nationality you are,
and why you are interested in our language, Craig? :)
Ciao! :)
