Are Hugh Ashton's Ground and Hugh Ashton's Hornpipe one and the same
piece? My guess is they're not. I have the Glenn Gould and Davitt
Moroney recordings (cd) of William Byrd's Hugh Ashton's Ground. I'm
listening to a taped version of a Willi Apel Keyboard text in which
he cites "...a hornpipe by Hugh Aston circa 1480 to bout 1522...".
The reader, who is very good, says "Aston" and not "Ashton". Can
someone here tell me what I'm talking about? Thanks very much.

I think the hornpipe is by Ahshton and the ground is by Byrd.

I think you, Terry and I have cracked this nut. I've read here and
there that the Ashton Hornpype is held in exceedingly high regard by
music scholars. Taking a lead from Terry I ordered the Sophie Yates
chandos cd which includes the Ashton Hornpype. I will never ever tell
anyone how much I agreed to pay for the Sophie Yates cd. Never, ever.
It's outragious. Thank you both for helping out.
