Hi,

I came across somebody playing a recorder by Hopf recently, and
wondered whether anyone knows who Hopf are, and how they can be
contacted?

The Early Music Shop of New England (von Huene) in Brookline,
Massachusetts,(617) 277-8690 carries Hopf, which is known to make a nice
Kynseker copy.

Thanks, Barbara. Willi Hopf sold his business perhaps ten years ago, so
the instruments you are interested in are now made by Peter Kobliczek
(who was the foreman if you will of Hopf's workshop) and sold under his
name. The old "standard" Renaissance recorders (pearwood ones with pretty
ugly turnings) are no longer being made, but he makes a "Praetorius"
model instrument (with turnings from the drawings in Syntagma Musicum)
that is a modified Renaissance design with a slight taper to the bore,
and play two octaves with standard fingerings (except the bass an larger
sizes...) He also makes the same instrument without the fancy
turnings-same price...
Mollenhauer makes a similar line modeled on the Hieronymous Kysecker
recorders.

Both of which I can heartily recommend. I have a Mollenhauer Kynsecker
alto, the consort at my school has Mollenhauer Kynsecker SAT, and my
wife and I between us have the Kobliczek Praetorius SATB. I think the
Mollenhauers have a somewhat "windier" tone, which you may or may not
want depending on your style of music.
