Just wondering: Has anyone tried Crocker's History of Musical Style
lately? Of course you have to add your own CD list. And add a few women.
But it certainly puts the emphasis on "early", and is FUN.

I'm not a teacher but for programming research, still rely a great deal on
Gustav Reese's Old Norton Books, would that they could be updated with the
explosion of current musicology. The stimulation of Taruskin's approach
-Oxford 6 vols- should enliven your classrooms! Make them available.

Oh, as references and as handbooks they were
superb. And still would be, if they were up to
date. In contrast I could never get much out of
Bukofser's Baroque, which paled in comparison.
(Can't remember the spelling, either!)

Margaret, I haven't really considered the
Crocker, and of course for my large class I
really need a well-matched set of CDs. I know
how much you value his approach, and I should
really take another look.
