Susan Hellauer, founding member of the acclaimed women's vocal
ensemble Anonymous 4, returns to the Boston area for a weekend
exploration of Sarum chant. The Rite or Use of Sarum (the Latin name
for Salisbury) was Britain's own variation of the Roman liturgy
throughout the Middle Ages until the Reformation. While many Sarum
chants were also sung elsewhere in Christian Europe, Sarum Chant is a
distinct and distinctive melodic dialect, and includes many
compositions unique to the British Isles.
The workshop, sponsored by Recorders/Early Music MetroWest, ends with
a performance of a Sarum "Ladymass," with interpolations of early
English polyphony.
