Hi,

How do you compare Aulos 700 series (Haka model) soprano/alto
recorders and Yamaha 300 series (Rottengerg) recorders?

Wood grain models are available for both makers. What is the advantage
of wood grain finish? Just feeling and cosmetics? Or do they have
better sound quality?

TIA

CM

You play them both and pick the one you like. The consensus of the
people I know is that for tenor and bass, the Yamahas are better, but
some people like the soprano and alto Aulos better.

There are people who think the wood grain sounds better, but I know
someone who did a blind (not double blind) test and her testers
weren't able to tell the difference.

As with many other things, the player will make more of a difference than the
instrument.

Personally, I'd prefer the Aulos. But that's purely personal.

Re: the simulated wood finish, the better "look" probably brings a
psychological benefit to the player and hence, to the sound.

The Yamaha "wood" finish wears off the instrument quicker than the Aulos
one.

I'd buy a straightforward plastic instrument and put the extra money in my
savings account towards a real wood instrument.

Mollenhauer, Moeck and Dolmetsch all make good "student" model wooden
instruments as well as more expensive models. A dolmetsch pearwood "Academy"
soprano, or a Moeck Sycamore Flauto Rondo or a Mollenhauer pearwood "Canta"
will cost roughly 20-33% more than a Haka Aulos soprano with Rosewood
finish.

The Mollenhauer "Denner" soprano in pearwood costs about 50% more than the
Haka instrument, and is an award winning instrument.

Obviously you can spend more money on more exotic woods and on more
expensive models.

Of course the wooden instrument requires more care and is more fragile and
can be more temperamental ( the pun IS intended!) but imho, is worth it.
(But I'd have a decent plastic instrument for intensive practice!)

I have some very nice wooden Moeck & Mollenhauer instruments but find myself
playing my newest acquisitions an alto & soprano angel/peripole. $4.50 for
the soprano & less than $12.00 for the alto. I guess I just like the look
and feel of the instruments even though they aren't "pro quality". They look
more like a wooden renascence instrument and aren't as temperamental as my
wooden instruments. I also have several Yamaha & Aulos instruments laying
around the house.
