Jinxy's hot tip:

Check out Jack White's amazing Dead Weather band. We are talking
someone here who can channel the spirit of the Blues. This music is
primal and raw. Their album also has a version of New Pony on it ...
but don't let that put you off.

The Jack White-produced Loretta Lynn album is also great!

I keep meaning to check that one out. Thanks for the reminder,
Jumbo. I'll get onto it.

Jack White is special.

I couldn't listen to the Jack White-produced Loretta Lynn album. It goes
into the same slot as that newly recorded Wanda Jackson album.

I know that Jack White is by far, the greatest artist of the 00's but I
have yet to start appreciating him. My first contact was in those
Spike Jonz videos. I've got a bunch of White Stripe cds, but I find them
too dark and unmelodic.

I'm a big fan of the first few albums - White Blood Cells and Elephant
in particular - and I think he's a likable personality, but the White
Stripes got very repetitive on the last couple of records and The
Raconteurs were nothing special. This group seem more interesting
than The Ranconteurs, but if you want really raw, I'd go for PJ
Harvey:

Listen to Effect and Cause on Icky Thump a few times. If that does not
sway a Bob-lover like you, nothing else will...

I suggest Hotel Yorba from White Blood Cells or Black Math from
Elephant

White is awful, though uniquely so, and distinction counts in pop
music. Dylan fans like just about anyone with a Dylan association.
If one day White said "Dylan sucks" all "Bob lovers" would head for
the exits.

I haven't heard anything beyond the first White Stripes album, but the
'Bassed up' version wherein Steve MacDonald from Redd Kross dubbed
bass parts onto White Blood Cells and renamed it Redd Blood Cells...
The Stipes allowed MacDonald to post it on his site for download for a
limited time... That album sounds great with the bass added to it...
You can get it here...

I haven't heard anything else except for the 7 Army song... But I can
see the appeal White would offer to people...

I think this could be said about Dylan himself. He seems to have an
extremely soft soft for those who lionize him and, even better, cover
him. Most everybody else seems not worth mentioning.

So... if I like Jack White, it's only because I like Dylan. But... I
like loads of people who think Dylan is shit...

M Rick puffs on pipe, scratches his elbow-pad for a moment, ponders.
Then settles the matter to his own satisfaction and says:

"That's because you don't REALLY like them."

One day we will all grow up and be like M Rick. Please come round and
shoot us.

I think I read that. Didn't he say he was more influenced by things
like 'lollypop, lollypop, ooh lolly lollipop...".

But let's not mix up "influenced by" and "mean much to". Stipes sounds
like he was being honest. P. Rose's basic point is dead-on: over-
defensive Beatles fans reacting as if he'd said "The Beatles are
rubbish".

I actually find Jack White's brief association with Dylan one of the
least interesting things about him. I liked him long before he
collaborated with Bob and if he said he hated Dylan's music it
wouldn't change my opinion of his music one jot.

Hope this helps.

Of course not, but he would be stating a subjective view as an
objective one, and so that would justify strong reactions more.

But... personally I don't need a reason to find REM music irritating.
(If this was the "I don't get..." thread, I could have REM as one of
my 3, along with The Smiths and rugby).
