i love this album.  just fantastic.
i'd hate to put too close a definition to the song, but i think the reference to s & sp relates to the protagonist of the song who has "second degree burns from touching certain fruit i never should have touched in the first place."
other lyrics may support the notion that the singer finds himself in a tight place.  he knows better and wants to live morally right (ala Paul who used to be Saul...a man who was considered one of the brightest Jews alive who condoned, allowed and perhaps ordered the executions of early Christians, only to himself have a conversion experience through a self proclaimed immediate experience with God...having the "scales" fall from his eyes and himself converting to Christianity, changing his name to Paul and devoting the remainder of his life spreading the news of Christ and His teaching, even landing in Roman prison along the way.  He is considered the greatest apologist of the Christian faith and his writings are included among the books of the New Testament.)
However he is at a crossroads, also serving "Satan," if one will, or at least being burned and singed.  Perhaps he finds himself at the corner of Satan and St. Paul...this way, that way...trapped by his own longings and choices.  If he can only get to Colorado, though, he'd book it out of Satan and St. Paul.  Perhaps he finds himself unable to not touch the forbidden fruit...the desire is too great.  Paul called it a "thorn in the flesh..."  ... perhaps a constant struggle against our most carnal desires that may in turn lend themselves to one leading a less healthy lifestyle.
or maybe he just missed the D train...  :)

LOL. That was a real big but you had put up there, Ken. I hope you
don't mind that I snipped it entirely. Please don't get the wrong
idea. I like big buts, and I cannot lie.

Hieronymous, I can't help notice that you begin every post with an LOL.

Meanwhile, ken, thanks for responding. I'll get back to commenting on
the whole album when I've adsorbed it more. I can't remember who first
brought John Fullbright to my attention here. Was it you?

Almost everyone to whom I show Fullbright's video of The Flower Song is
knocked out by it. I'm not sure if the album is going to match that.
