Both Dundas and Heylin report that on 14th April 1987 Bob played
harmonica for Ringo Starr at Chips Moman's Three Alarm Studio in
Memphis, TN. Anyway the album never appeared. Heylin reports that
Ringo thought he was too much "under the influence" at the time, and
I've heard that this was when Bob was doing a bit in that direction
himself.

Anyway, the "lost" Ringo album has turned up on a bootleg on the Voxx
label called "Lost And Found". CD1 is Ringo's "Memphis 1987 LP" and
CD2 consists of out-takes from George Harrison's "Cloud Nine"
sessions.

I don't personally have this set, BTW, if you want it you'll have to
contact your usual source of such things.

The song on which Bob played was called Wish I Know Now What I Knew
Then - a typical country title if ever I heard one! :-) However, I'm
unable to turn it up on the ASACP, BMI or SESAC databases - this may
not be the exact wording of the title. Does anyone know the song and
its author?

Could it be "Wish I Knew Then What I Know Now"? That has a truer ring to it.

Clearly a further indication of Mr. Dylan's reliance on the work of master
wordcraftsman Bob Seger:

Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then

No, it's actually " I Wish I Knew Now What I Knew Then", opposite to
the normal expression - as I said, a wry country title. Dag Bratthen
kindly pointed me to a recording by Curtis Wright:

If you listen to the song lyrics you'll hear why the title is what it
is!

Now all I have to do is find out who wrote it - the Curtis Wright page
doesn't say.

I was too optimistic!

Now I know the exact title I found _two_ songs in the online
BMI database called "I Wish I Knew Now What I Knew Then".
The first is by T J Knight and Curtis Wright - the one above.
The second is by Charlie Craig and Vince Gill. It'll be
interesting to find out which of these songs Ringo is singing!

No, no, no, no, no, no. You forgot something very
important. He was so much older then. He's younger than
that now.

Oh, I've been on the job too long,
