Ralph J. Gleason's 1960's jazz television series Jazz Casual is available
in Europe on DVD from IDEM. His television documentaries Duke Ellington
Love You Madly and A Concert Of Sacred Music At Grace Cathedral will be
out, worldwide, on DVD, soon, from Eagle Rock Entertainment, as will his
Jefferson Airplane/Grateful Dead/Santana documentary A Night At The Family
Dog. His Bob Dylan -- A Poet's Press Conference will be released by Eagle
Rock on DVD in 2006 and will include the never-published liner notes to the
legendary, never-released 1960's Dylan live LP. And, a collection of his
writings on jazz artists, Celebrating The Duke, is available from Da Capo
Press.
For more about the author, see the official Ralph J. Gleason Collection
Website.
These DVD's should be interesting. Our public library has a few
of his TV shows with Jazz people on VHS. Pretty good stuff.
What was really strange was the chain smoking going on through
the entire interview. Reminded me of a Ren and Stimpy cartoon.
There is underground network that will consider this just an upgrade and
make it available via trading routes. Snicker snicker!
So you're saying that the official release of material which is valuable to
the historical perception of the artist is not important, in fact is
laughable, because it has previously circulated "underground"? Sorry, can't
agree with that. Nothing to snicker about. I would like to see it all "out
there" officially. I know that probably upsets some people's elitist
tendencies. That's just the way it is.
TJ
Wow; way to twist my words. I did not say it was not important; I said
there was no value added to those of us that already have it. No incentive
to go out and buy it just because it is now officially realeased.
Nor did I say that it has previously circulated underground, any more than
any other bootleg you might have circulates underground. The trading of
bootlegs is done pretty much out in the open. The underground network I
speak of are the people that many of us know that have no qualms about
trading official releases that straddle the fine line between bootlegs and
pirate copies.
FYI, I don't advocate trading official releases, but I don't lose sleep
because people do it. I do snicker about it though. That's just the way it
is.
I can hoot!
