I came across something called Get Music on aol, where they listed the worst
albums of all time by good artists. Self-Portrait is #1, with a clip from I
Forgot More than You'll Ever Know. Here's the list

1. Bob Dylan, Self-Portrait 2. Neil Young, Trans 3. The Rolling Stones, Their
Satanic Majesties Request 4. Lou Reed, Metal Machine Music 5. David Bowie,
Tonight 6. Elvis Costello, Goodbye Cruel World 7. Madonna, Dick Tracy: "I'm
Breathless" 8. Michael Jackson, Blood on the Dance Floor 9. Oasis, Standing on
the Shoulder of Giants 10. The Clash, Cut the Crap 11. Elvis Presley, the
Sixties Hollywood albums 12. Aerosmith, Rock in a Hard Place 13. Guns 'N Roses,
The Spaghetti Incident? 14. Rod Stewart, Blondes Have More Fun 15. The
Notorious B.I.G., Born Again

Geez... How can an album with Alberta #1, Days of 49 and Minstrel Boy be worse
than Metal Machine Music AND Blondes Have More Fun?

Obviously, they should listen again to Satanic Majesties Request

hehe, dylans is first beacuse they were in such greater shock. they probably
put the best artists worst album as #1. notice the last worst album was the
notorious BIG. shows something.

good?.

One might consider "Self-Portrait" a good album, but if it's a bad one, it's
bad in a more complex and confounding way than Metal Machine Music, which is
more of a novelty album...I get a kick out of Metal Machine Music, but it's
doesn't strike me as a masterpiece, whether it was intended as a joke or
not...it was made to be put on worst-album lists (other Lou Reed albums could
be on that list too, intentionally bad or not). If Self-Portrait was intended
as a joke (who can trust Dylan on the matter?), then it's a complex, hilarious
joke. Satanic Majesty's Request is more dated than anything else, and has a
few very good songs on it. I think Prince's Batman Soundtrack may belong on
that list.

I hope you mean because it's a much better album than anything else on
the list. It's not the Rolling Stones' best or anything, but they've
done a few that should rank lower.

What I mean is that the album is a lot better than most people give it
credit for. Listen to it again; I find it has aged well.

i agree.
satanic majesties request wasn't so bad.
it's probably the weakest album they had done up until the point they
released it, and weaker than the next few albums they released as well
(all masterpieces - beggars banquet, let it bleed, sticky fingers,
and exile on main street), but its better than any of the
albums the stones have done since 'tattoo you.'

The Rolling Stones "Their Satanic Majesties Request"? That is one of my favorite
Stones albums! Weird and moody psychedelia at its best. Oh well....

ramblin man wondered:

>and since when were `Oasis` considered good?

A few years ago quite a few Americans were fooled into thinking they were
good when their ubiquitous hit reigned the airwaves:
"Ba-bay/you're gonna be the one that saves mey/
Don't let the sound of your own wheels make you cra-zay"
I don't know if "Standing on the Shoulder of Giants" (sic) is the worst
album of all time, 'cause I've never heard it, but it probably contains the
worst grammatical error in any album title of all time.

Actually I thought Trans by Neil Young was pretty good, same as Goodbye
Cruel World by Elvis Costello.

Obviously not a patch on a Britney Spears or Christine Aguila album
tho....;)

I like Satanic Majesties too and would vote for either Goat's Head Soup
or It's Only Rock and Roll as worst Stones albums. I stopped listening
to them after that.

Who gives a fuck what some pointy headed asshole critic thinks regarding the
best or worst albums of all time. I despise lists like that. They should be
renamed "Favorite Album of All Time" or "Least Favorite Albums of All Time."

The jerk has probably never even heard the record. If you like Self-Portrait (I
sure do) then that's fine. Have enough strength and confidence within yourself
to enjoy it and not let a differing opinion get to you.

I hate lists too. They've got to be the dumbest, stupidest waste of time. Who
gives a fuck what a list says? I can make up my own mind about things.

Reasons Why I Hate Lists:

10) They're the opinion of one person or one group of persons.
9) They're a waste of time. People read them and then say "Why the fuck did I
read that? I don't agree with it at all."
8) They're bad for the environment- think of all the paper and ink that's
wasted on lists, all of which are stupid and worthless.
7) They're often misnamed as "Best ...." or "Worst...." when they should be
named "Favorite...." or "Least Favorite..."
6) They're often used by publications to take up some empty space on light
news days and contribute little or nothing to anything.
5) They take too long too read. I can get a better laugh from reading the
editiorial page in half the time.
4) They're always the 10 best, 50 worst, 100 best etc. You NEVER see the 17
best or 31 worst of something.
3) Too often, they're compiled by a board or a group without particular
indiviuals being given due credit or discredit as the case may be.
2) There are too many of them. Who gives a fuck about the list of the day.
1) They're used too often by people who say they hate lists in order to
describe at least some of the reasons why they do so.

THAT'S why I hate lists!!!

Then you missed Black and Blue and Some Girls, which have some fine moments.
Everything since has been crap to my ears.

I thought you said good artists. Maybe the Who or the Byrds never had bad
albums.
And Satanic is awesome! Even the eight-disc outtakes set is great.

That's why you're wrong about their worst album. They still did a few
good ones after that, but all of the top contenders for their worst all
come after that, too.
