Pretty good job. Here's the lists I did for Digital Dream Door of the
(Objective) top 120 songs of each year, in case you want to do cover
more for each year:

Here's 1960:

http://digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/bg_hits/bg_hits_60.html

You can get to the rest of the years from there.

Here's an interesting exercise: filter out the ones that you think aren't
very good (some I'd classify as dogs). What remains:

1967 is the clear winner. The early '60s were dreadful overall, no surprise
there.

I've got several DVDs of mp3 files of the top 100 Billboard songs from 45 to 79. Could probably put this list together for my musical enjoyment. What was your criteria for the list rr?

You filter out "Cathy's Clown" and "Money" (which the Beatles liked
well enough) , and you leave in "Running Bear?" Oh, well. De gustibus
non est disputandum.

No Sam Cooke, no Arthur Alexander, but Frank Ifield stays in?

My guess is that you think the early 60s were awful because you haven't
delved very deeply into them.

It's one of the best traditional pop records ever made IMO.

Sometimes it's hard to figure out which year a song was biggest in.

My criteria was my favorite songs from that year. I might have missed
some if they weren't on the lists I was looking at.

A strange pick considering that the Hollywood Argyles version was #1
and the Dante and the Evergreens version was top 15 or so. The Dyna-
Sores was a much smaller hit, although it is sung better than the
other two (a black group as opposed to the other two white groups).
Was the Dyna-Sores version the one that was played then where you were
in 1960?

These are all based on year of release.

That's the best criteria of all: your own personal favorite! I cannot argue with that

I played this for a dance party and it went over very well. The music
really swings, and the lyrics are a lot of fun. It's a real personal
favorite

They're both very druggy songs

The Everlys had much better songs than Cathy's Clown. And there are much
better covers of "Money" than Strong's original.

Again, Chuck had much better songsm as did Brenda. Mann's song was an
interesting novelty in an otherwise dreary year.

Ditto (see 1961).

I didn't need to do any delving. I was musically cognizant by 1960, heard
all of it the first time around. The British Invasion was a great relief.

Well, as I said, unlike Bruce I don't think taste is arguable, but it
is interesting how much of the music you find uninteresting the British
invasion bands found exciting.

Good point MD. The British groups worshipped Arthur Alexander and Bo
Diddley and Ray Charles and Jimmy reed and the early Motown records
like "Money" and "Shop Around."

Well, first, they grew past it (as did I). Second, I think overall the
mid-to-late 50s were more interesting than 1960-1962.

We certainly agree on that.

But those groups never grew past what they liked. Whenever the Beatles
had down time in the studio they invariably started jamming on some
50s or early 60s song they like, such as "That's All Right" or "Some
Other Guy." Lennon did several early 60s songs in the 70s, like "Stand
By Me" and "Be My Baby," Ringo too with "You're Sixteen" and George
later on with the obscure "Got My Mind Set On You" which was done
originally by James Ray in like 1962. Springsteen regularly performs
early 60s songs live (Quarter To Three, Da Doo Ron Ron).

Bo Diddley's best work (IMO) was in the late 50s. Alexander was kind of a
minor player; he had some good tunes, though. I've always thought Ray
Charles was an icon; I didn't keep "Ruby" on my list because I thought he
did some much better songs (including "Hit The Road Jack" and "Busted",
which I did keep). Overall, I thought RR's list had a rather poor selection
of songs from black artists; I thought some other ones not listed were
better.

And there wasn't even a Reed song on the original list.

I agree with your second point. I just think that, despite top-40 radio
going downhill after 1958 until the British invasion, there was lots of
good music being made during the "cusp years." You just had to dig a
little deeper to find it.

As for the British bands growing past that music, as late as "Lady
Madonna" McCartney was imitating Fats Domino and as late as "Let it
Bleed" the Stones were still imitating Bo Diddley (compare "Nasty
Habits" with "Who Do You Love,") and as late as the radio show Dylan
was still apparently happy to play tons of music from the whole period
between 1948 and the British Invasion.

I'd say more like 55-58. But he had several classics in the 60s too.

Perhaps. Mainly in those years, my older cousin controlled the radio dial,
and as a consequence I got lots of Annette and Frankie and Fabian.

I like those songs, but those bands' albums had a bunch of other, more
"modern" (at the time) songs as well. I appreciated the mix.

I bought "The Rolling Stones Now" album when it first came out; a lot of the
songs on that album are blues/R&B covers. I actually like that version of
the Stones better than when the albums had (almost exclusively)
Jagger/Richards songs.

As for the Beatles, well, they mixed it up very well. "Lady Madonna" is a
great tune and I got the Fats Domino (another guy who did his best stuff in
the 50s) connection immediately. McCartney also "did" Little Richard on a
couple of good tunes. But I like their more adventurous stuff better, like
Strawberry Fields and A Day In The Life. It's no surprise that those guys
paid homage to their roots, but they wouldn't be considered (by most folks)
the greatest rock act of all time had they not progressed beyond those
influences.

The Dyna-Sores was played first in Vancouver and then the Hollywood
Argyles version replaced it and became the big hit. I think I always
resented this. And because the Dyna-Sores version sounded better, I went
with it.

I can't find the post where Bloomfield wonders why I didn't have Sam
Cooke but instead had Frank Ifield.

I did use Digital Dreams as my source for finding the songs, and this
might explain why I missed some important black artists who didn't make
Digital's lists.

I have a Sam Cooke for the first three years of the 60s except for 1961.
I guess I should have put Cupid on 1961.

Frank Ifield is kind of a special quirky one-hit wonder. I'd hate to
leave him out.

That wasn't me, it was Dintenfass, and he wasn't talking about you, he
was talking about Rich's lists of which songs from the early 60s that
he thought were not shit.

That's a good enough reason to dislike the era. :-)

I like Beatles stuff from every period, and I used to be very taken
with the sense of "growth" and "development" they embodied. But looking
back now, I think they were far more consistently great in their middle
period--"Rubber Soul" is my favorite of their albums--and I think there
is better music overall on "Help" than on "Sgt. Pepper."

Nice set, but nothing by Chubby Checker, given the popularity of the
twist? Last big radio song to tickle these ears before it was
displaced by the sound of The Beatles and the British invasion for the
rest of the decade was Hooka Took by Chubby Checker, #17 the night
those pesky moptops played Sullivan...

Oddly enough, I (mainly) agree! I don't rank "Pepper" among my favorites.
In no particular order (since I seem to gravitate from one to another on a
weekly basis), my top four are:

Revolver
Rubber Soul
Abbey Road
A Hard Day's Night

Pepper was great in terms of introducing a "concept" but in terms of
execution (and individual song quality) I don't think it's as good as any of
my top four. The White Album sounds like a collection of individual musical
efforts (which in reality it was) rather than a coherent effort, and in my
view Let It Be just sucked. I think Abbey Road turned out well because by
that time it had dawned on them that it would be their final legacy.

That's a huge exageration. After the Beatles hit in early 1964 there
were still plenty of American artists having hits. Even more American
artists were having hits than British artists were, all through the
60s. Lots more.

For instance, here's the DDD list for 1966, minus the British acts:

90 of the 120 songs are by American acts (75%).

The myth that the radio became all British inbasion in 1964 and beyond
is just that, a myth.

You are correct, but I said "these ears." Sure I listened to Wilson
Pickett, Sam & Dave, Jr. Walker, JB, and the charts had plenty of what
seemed like diversity, but my classmates sure didn't know about it or
care. They were all about this new sound and phase in product
development and demographic marketing.

There was no way they could miss these things then. There was no radio
playing the Britsh Invasion except for top 40 stations that also
played most of the other stuff on this ;list. It wasn't until at least
like 1968 or 1969 that most markets had an FM stations that just
played album styled rock.

I grew up in the crossfire between Karl Graf and Rudy Frank. Just a
hip hop cross Main, the scenes were worlds apart. High school was the
raisinhood and we had to take the bus, as they say these days, to bust
a move. It wasn't until the end of the decade that this demographic
"rediscovered" horns and heritage, through the adoption of aged black
musical fathers by their would-be commercial musical sons. And there I
was at the Armory digging Kool and the Gang...

I never noticed I left out Chubby, which is interesting because I'm a
fan. I always liked his Popeye the Hitchhiker song.

Maybe because I already have a Twist compilation, I figured I didn't
need to put The Twist on one of the years

We basically agree. I think the White Album could have been one very
good LP, but they could have canned the other. I love the "second side"
of Abbey Road, but almost never play the first side. There's some good
stuff on "Let It Be" (Across the Universe, Get Back, and the title
song) but plenty of filler. What makes Rubber Soul and Revolver special
is how consistently good they are. Even "Michelle" is listenable.
"Tomorrow Never Knows" is probably the great divide for the two
varieties of Beatles fans. I'm pro.

I love "Tomorrow never knows", one of the first psychedelic songs... What makes "The White album" so unique and special is it's 4 sides...

Not all the songs are actually twistable, and there are a lot of great
twist songs that can be appropriated, as they showed us in Pulp Fiction
that Never Can Tell was a twist song.

I once got into a newsgroup argument who claimed The Twist wasn't a real
dance, and there's no such thing as Twist music.

You might have noticed that I left the Twist comp off my list of comps.

My Twist comp is a matter of stamina. How many songs can I do the twist
to before I collapse.

I've been tempted to make a compilation out of all the different
versions of Twist and Shout. But I've learned that those comps never get
played.

Your list of Twist songs has a few good ones, like Dylan's and Graham
Parkers, but "twist" is not interesting enough metaphorically to
justify a compilation

I'm sure you've forgotten at the time, or are too lazy to do the
research and look up the old threads, but "Do" is a very rich
compilation. I'm proud of myself for figuring out just how much the word
"do" can be part of a lot of very good songs.

DO/
1. The Beatles- Love Me Do
2. Marvin Gaye - Baby Don't You Do It
3. Steely Dan - Do It Again
4. Brinsley Schwarz - Happy Doing What We're Doing
5. The Beach Boys - Do It Again
6. Cher - All I Really Want To Do
7. Clarence Henry-(I Don't Know Why) But I Do
8. The Rolling Stones- What To Do
9. Elvis Costello - I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself
10. Bob Dylan- Whatcha Gonna Do
11. Little Richard - It Ain't What You Do
12. Manfred Mann- Do Wah Diddy Diddy
13. The Kinks - Do It Again
14. The Loving Spoonful - Didn't Want to Have to Do It
15. Jesse Winchester - Do It
16. Buddy Holly - What To Do
17. Gerry & The Pacemakers- How Do You Do It
18. Eddie & The Hot Rods- Do Anything You Wanna Do
19. Donovan - Oh Deed I Do
20. Jimmy Clanton - What Am I Gonna Do
21. Delaney & Bonnie- All We Really Want To Do
22. Taj Mahal - Why You Do Me This Way
23. The Flying Burrito Brothers- Do Right Woman
24. Toussant McCall - I'll Do It For You
25. Commonwealth Jones - Do Do Do
26. Edwyn Collins - Do It Again
27. James Brown - Why Do You Do Me

No, no, you still don't understand.

It's the way the word "do" resonates in those songs. It's got nothing at
all to do with how common it is in your data base, aside from making it
a very hard comp for which to find the songs.

(Sigh,) it's like trying to tell a stranger about metaphors.
