they are both amazing. i love self portrait. its almost like a outtakes
album. outtakes from nashville skyline, new morning, and from the pink
house in 1967 with the band. im very pleased with this album. it took so
long for me to get because i heard negative comments about it, but its
great. hard rain obviously is from the rolling thunder revue tour of
'75. the songs are performed in different times and styles too which
remind me of how frank zappa used to perform his songs live also. i read
that this album was pushed by albert grossman because dylan was getting
rid of him at the time. i think thats how it went. its been a while
since i read "behind the shades". i like this one a lot too.

I have a buddy whose introduction to Dylan was the Self-Portrait album,
and they loved it, and then discovered the rest of Dylan's catalog. He
still says that Self-Portrait is one of the great Dylan albums.

Who gives a bleep what critics say. If you like it, that's good.

Dylan is great on Self Portrait. The rest of the guys don't sound like
they're in the same room with him. (And apparently, they weren't)

Welcome to the "I Love Self-Portrait Club." There are several of us
here.

And some non-believers.

Yes, they are the ones for whom the sign-language interpreters at
concerts were hired. You know - the people who stand off to the side
of the stage and wave their hands around, signing "all the tired horse
in the sun, how'm I gonna get any ridin' done" endlessly. They are
there so the people who like Self Portrait can enjoy the concert, too.
