Not blind, but extremely nearsighted.

Stevie Wonder is blind. Syd Barrett may also be blind. My next door neighbor
Martha is blind. I am not blind.

He wasn't blind but he really should have been. He may have been the
most blind-looking person with sight of the rock era. Which is a damned
fine achievement on some level.

This is a side point, but you have got me wondering if it's possible
for blind people to post to newsgroups (you know, some audio-reader or
something). I suddenly got sad that it might not be possible. Oh no,
now I'm totally bummed out.

Nope. The sunglasses were just a part of his "look". In fact, in his
early career he didn't wear them at all. From what I understand he
started wearing them during a tour of England in the early 60s-- on
which the Beatles were also booked--when his regular glasses were broken
& just liked ho wthey looked.

Orbison died in 1988.

Here's an account from "Dark Star: The Roy Orbison Story"
by Ellis Amburn - Page 3-4.

"Roy wore glasses from a very early age, and Orbie Lee
Harris (a childhood friend) remembers how and when it was
discovered Roy needed them. One day they were sitting on
the front porch of the Harrises' house in Vernon, playing
with their crayons and coloring book, and Roy annoyed Orbie
Lee by insisting on holding the book upside down. Though Roy
didn't yet realize it, his vison was going haywire, and he
was trying to bring the coloring book into focus by holding
it at different angles. At the age of four he was fitted with
thick bifocals, and when he peered from behind the lenses, his
eyes looked like BB's. As Roy grew up he came to despise the
way he looked, finally hiding his "beady eyes" behind dark
glasses"

Cheer up.A regular poster to the Grateful Dead newsgroup is blind.I don't know
the name of the software he uses.
Besides,if I suddenly went blind, newsgroups would be the last thing I'd miss
looking at.

That is reassuring, thanks!

Of course. But if you'd been blind for a very, very long time, and
music was central to your life... that's the part that got to me. The
community-connection element.

Roy Orbison was not certainly NOT blind.

He was doing a TV show in London early in his career and the studio lights were
extremely bright. He put on a pair of sunglasses and the positive comments
after the show convinced him to keep that look.

Anyone who is 'absolutely sure' that he was blind is not even a minor league
music fan.

Come on now. Anyone in the know knows
that Roy was a vampire. The sunlight hurt
his eyes, as is the case with most of the
"undead". But, wait a minute. If this is true,
where has Roy been these past 14 years?

He moved into his families castle in the Carpathian mountains from
what I hear.
